I'm just waiting for Nigerian freshwater stingrays... A bit smaller and more manageable than the rest I think :)

At this stage... not sure if we will ever see any for sale

They on the endangered species and the red list... so.. no chance on wild caughts
If by any chance we did come across any wild caughts.. I would be very reluctant to get any... from what I have seen unless those rays are treated and properly cleared of parasites before being exported, Ray keepers with years of experience land up losing their rays and sometimes have their whole tanks contaminated and even wiped out
Its a hell of a chance
I also dont see anyone n Nigeria captive breeding them so chances are one in a million of getting any
Most of the rays coming in today are hybrids with a large percentage carrying the marble or mini marble bloodline so they will not get as big as your pure bred ones anyway

I'd hardly think so. Besides the fact that there's extremely little information on their care (or any of the freshwater dasyatids for that matter), the last few guys I spoke to that attempted these species said they don't adapt well to captivity at all. Also last I checked nobody was sure on their final sizes...

On topic, well done on the kids. I'm sure each time they pop out a few more it gets easier and easier for you to follow the motions.

    Thanks @SalmonAfrica ..

And you are right.. if you go through the overseas ray forums.. no one keeps freshwater dasyatids...

That's true. I have read an article on them apparently acclimating relatively well, apparently they taste good smoked too

Very fair points. Must be careful with wild caught fish, have experience there. Shame on the wild situation though.

How does one know if they're hybrids?

@Hendre... you need to familiarize yourself with the different species and their characteristics and learn to identify them

You will then know if a hybrid or not

price also a big factor, hybrids cheap pure rays carry a substantial price as they are far less commonly bred on Asian fish farms.

    Agree with @Salmon and @MariaS
Keeping these is not feasible at the moment.

Not necessarily. Some of the crosses involving black diamonds go for very high prices.

Ah alright. I'm useless with rays, I've seen motoros available here but shame they were kept with mollies of all fish. And a week later they were gone.

Hybrids are a bit of an issue in some places. Sorry if I forgot, but are your rays pure or hybrids?

    Makes sense :)

True but really doubt we going to see a big spot, or a snow leopard at local fish store in South Africa sadly, thou it would be very cool. and probably result in me being very broke, hungry and living in a box under my fish tank

Is your tank big enough to add another one at a later stage?
