I've had to pull up a few of these... They just end up overrunning a pond. Seems a waste hey?

Yes, they do get very big! I do cut mine back regularly to keep the leaves submersed.

But they do a good job in the tanks and ponds - the more plants the better for the fish.

Mine also grew straight out of my tank and have ended up in a mates pond. With the liquid ferts and the flourite they went mad.. Uprooting them is also not fun as they have quite and adventitious root system, makes a real mess.. They aren't really ideal for tanks i guess but they are so quick and easy to grow.

Amazon Swords are not a dark green, but range from an almost yellowish green to lime green when grown submerged.
Only when they are allowed to grow emerged will they darken, but never to the dark green of some other plants, like Anubias.

You can add a fertiliser tab to inert soil.
My Amazons' root system covered almost a quarter of the tank after about a month, with 1 Seachem Flourish tab providing nutrition.

Do they survive in cold ponds?

    They don't look bad.
The melting could be to being replanted, and possibly a lack of nutrients.
Cut the melting transparent leaves off as close to the stem as possible, and the plant should start pushing out new leaves.

How much light do swords need, like the ones Fishlips posted? Mine are lush green, and stopped melting about two weeks after planting. I put a root tab into each pot with only one plant in a pot and yet they grow very slowly. I cut most of the large leaves off after they melted but each plant has 5 to 7 new baby leaves that has grown about 5cm in two months :( My Discus grew faster than that haha

Amazon swords are slow growers. 7-9 hours are fine for them give them time to grow.
