    hi guys
i had an extremely traumatic experience today that i just need to share with someone who understands

i have had 4 Mono Angels in my tank for while now (a size of about a R5 coin when i got them) and they have grown beautifully large.
anyway, i was feeling that they were outgrowing my tank and i want to streamline my tank to tanginyikans only so i decided to try and sell em
after trying for a while and not finding a buyer i decided to sell em at a store, luckily for myself i found a store willing to take them from me at minimal price of course, not anywhere close to what they worth (in fact cheaper than what they were selling little ones for in the same store), but i was happy they were going to a good home irrespective.

how ever, after i had done the transaction the guy in the store began to pour the water and mono angels over from my bucket into a smaller bucket!!
without using a net to catch them, he said he didnt have lis!! obviously his smaller bucket got filled with water before mine emptied and the fish were poured out, so he sent a helper to throw some of my water out..... the helper comes back with an empty bucket, so he just threw the leftover water and three of the four fish into the bucket (now much to little water for them) and the fourth mono got stuck behind in the bucket.... so gives the bucket a little bang soo the fish would fall out

i was shocked speechless and walked out of the store in a daze, it was an extremely horrific experience for me

sorry if i vented a bit much but.... eish

eish no respect for people like that. They dont realise that kind of stress will kill the fish.

I had one idiot show me that the packet with fish in it was indeed watertight, how?

    he shook the packet:mad::mad:

Worts yet is buying 8 cardinals and after almost killing them in the catching of the fish the worst came..... the 8th cardinal stuck to the inside of the bag above the water and insted of tilting the bag till he got into the water she decided to flick him of the side with her fingers!!! I was lost of words when i came to he was already not swimming properly and when i said he is going to die the reply was "No he'll be fine i do it all the time" they gave me an extra fish cause i was complaning probably just to get rid of me. The one she flicked was dead before i reached the car.

Sorry to say that some of those monos won't make it - Monodactylus are known for dying in tank transfers, especially if they're in freshwater, and especially if the move is traumatic. I've seen this happen with Monos the size of tea saucers.... really horrible.

Yar.. if someone wants to sell me fish that they traumatize like that whilst they're in the packet, I'll tell them to rather put them back and I won't come back there.. they can think for themselves that fish are gentle creatures..

Yeah, true, I have done that at a certain lfs, needless to say the guys were shocked to hear me say i dont want the fish cause of the way they were treating it. I also dont buy anything there anymore, however once in about 3 months i pop in to see what they have

I can probably guess which store that is Riyadh, and if its the same one I think it is, I have also refused fish there because of how they treated them as and after catching them. In fact, its gotten so bad in the Cape, that there's only one or two shops that I would consider using anymore (assuming that I was still buying fish, and not packing down!)!

It really angers me the way fish are treated in LFS's, and has been something that has affected my view of the hobby! I will not support this trade if they abuse it!

    G!

Yeah, absolutely true. I tend to visit a few shops around the western cape from time to time. oneshop i am allowed to catch my own fish, and there is one or two guys there that catch fish for me without hassle. I find that a handful of shops actually know how to catch certain fish, and one shop that i am slowly starting to gain respect for again after years are actually concerned with the type of fish you are putting the fish with. Actually one guy in the shop

No, because your bad experience at a shop could be due to so many factors, and yet another person gets excellent service. Whether a LPS is good or not is always open for debate, and based on opinions. So there won't be such a list available. Sorry, you will have to do your own leg-work and visit all the LPS. Over time you eventualy know which ones to go to for what.

Site is sponsored, and we do not provide free advertising to other LPS.

yes I agree with Zoom, hence why I didnt reply yet. My opininions are definately based on my experiences. And these can also change over time. It is what you like or dont like.

i tend to be very vocal when i go to a lfs, i speak nicely to the guys and everything, but when i choose a fish, i say nice and clearly, "careful how you handle that fish!" even befor they start catching them, i dont do this at the places where i know the guys work carefully with fish and even plants..

one guy even doesnt like putting water in the bag with plants coz he says if its in a bag with water, the plant shloshes around and damages the leaves when you driving etc. my kind of lfs owner. :)

he considers what happens to the plants even AFTER its left his shop. and he wont sell me fish if they not compatible.
