    Hi Professor,
I found this "recipe" on the net about making home made fish food and I was wondering what your opinion on this would be.

I'd really like to give my fish a nice range of foods, but at the same time don't want to give them anything that's not good for them.

    Recipe:
Hope you're enjoying your trip ^^,

    Regards

Regarding homemade foods you need to understand the importance and qualities of each ingredient.adding off the shelf foods sometimes have no benefits.protein elements are usually ox heart and prawn/shrimp meat,(i used to add baby carrots for the carotene component for color)blanched lettuce and peas for the fibre component eggs are usually used as a binding agent instead of gelatine.spirulina and a little garlic would do no harm at all

I have made my own Discus food before:

    Ostrich Fillet
    Shrimp
    Hake
    Spirulina
    Vitamin C
    Spinach
    Brewers Yeast
    Egg
    Garlic

And a couple of other things added in there. Be careful of Ox heart. Unless you know it is not coming from Hormone fed live stock, be very careful. That's why I substituted it with the Ostrich Fillet.

It's excellent stuff. Adding a good varied diet for your fish is extremely important!

My answer from Antananarivo in Madagascar:

Forget about all these mixes, they are much more expensive for you to prepare, you need gelatin and other stuff to get the mixtures to bind together without which, if these foods fall apart in the water, they cause incredible pollution which easily kill your fish, and finally and most importantly, what tells us that these mixes are balanced fish foods?

I mean who has told you that ostrich fillet is the correct food for fishes? I see many great whites swimming around in the sea off Oudtshoorn after the KKNK eating the excess ostrich steaks. Why Hake, mainly water in any case? Spirulina and vitamin C, but how much and why? Spinach, why, Brewers yeast, why, because of vit B group vitamins, but we do not know if fishes need them. Raw egg binds some of the B group vitamins and is more harmful than good. Garlic, why, because there is some rumor around that it has a negative effect on parasitic worms.

For the amateur this is a disaster and I would strongly advise against it and unless your a nutritionist forget about it, leave it to the vets that know. I have stopped making my own mixes completely, last but not least my wife was highly unhappy if I had made a mess of her kitchen after another one of my mixing attempts. I now only feed professional mixes and could not be bothered and my fish growth tells me that I am not doing to wrong thing.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Thanks Dirk, your explanation makes sense :)
    I'll steer clear rather.

@ Brads. I have the portions, just didn't post them up. Will rather listen to the professor as I'm sure the foods he supplies are rich in nutrients anyway ^^,
