Hi everyone. I have taken over a tank 4 days ago from someone. I havent had a tropical aquariuma in more that 8 years. The tank had all the basics. Gravel, outside hanging filter with spunge charcoal and gravel filters inside, a heater and a rock. Also a pump and blue stone for making bubbles. I also got two Bala Sharks and a Water Butterfly with the tank. I messed it all up when I cleaned the tank as soon as i got home, i threw in some anti chlore stuff to the tap water i added. Two hours later i added the fish. The bala sharks both died unfortunatly but luckily the butterfly made it. 24 hours later i added aplycostimus and 3 neon tetras. And thats my full history up to now. PS the tank is a normal square 50 liter made out of glass...
welcome ... I'd stop adding fish till the tank has matured a bit .. Are you planning on adding some plants? BTW we need a picture as proof that you have a tank ;-)
I dont have a nice pick yet, and how long will it take to mature? My kids wanna see fishes and im afraid they will start adding stuff to look at...
See http://www.tropicalaquarium.co.za/showthread.php?t=245 "adding stuff " Lol - might want to invest in a hood for the tank ...
Ill trys adding pics from home tomorow. At work im using a proxy and that prevents me to use a lot of the site's functions like adding pics... Ah you got me. yes i do have a hood and even a light...There is also a cheap ghost ship that makes bubbles if you put a air stone under it...
Welcome to TASA Batsec! Did you wash the gravel that you got with the tank and the sponge etc before setting up the tank again?
Yes I washed the charcoal the gravel the sponge the tank and even the gravel in the tank. Maybe overkill on my side.Well so we learn.
Hi and WELCOME Batsec. Washing all the filter stuff and gravel killed all the good bacteria... that's why Vee asked. DON'T ADD ANY MORE FISH for at least 3 more weeks. Let the bacteria colony establish itself in your tank
Yep, Dr Zoom, i concur :captain: Welcom dude, adding those fish too fast without the bacteria having a chance to multiply sufficiently will cause the ammonia product the fish are secreting in poop etc spike, which will make the water toxic for your fish to live in give the tank a chance to cycle properly Very informative thread that F-fish pointed out earlier see http://www.tropicalaquarium.co.za/showthread.php?t=245 here
As I say so we learn. One question, should I now replace the de-activated charcoal in my filter seeing as it is still early days. I did wash the charcoal the first day i got it because i was not sure what it was. I would guess replace charcoal but dont wash the other filter item???Thanx for the warm welcome from everyone so far...
Yip yip. Let the tank cycle before adding more fish or else you'll have to be explaining to the children why the fish are floating and not swimming :blink1: Or quickly replace them before they find out - not that I've EVER done that :flute:
You can leave the activated charcoal out bud. It only good for when you want to remove medication and other chemicals from the water after dosing fish. Most fish hobbyists don't keep charcoal in their filter. (I know, I couldn't believe it at first until I tried it myself!)
