    Hi Oscar.

As discussed in your previous thread, guppies are the way to go if you want faster breeding but platies tend to have bigger (40+) batches of fry. Another thing to consider is that guppies are more popular. If you are considering guppies, consider show guppies.

I am starting my own show guppy breeding program as soon as I get paid so maybe I can run through things with you as I go along.

Setting up multiple tanks can be costly but may be more manageable

    Do this:

Have 4 guppies of a specific strain (1 male and 3 females). Lets call the strain "Yellow Snake Skin"

Have these 4 guppies in a 50L/2ft tank. They will drop fry. Remove the female that dropped, 2 days after the drop to a conditioning tank. Feed her well on high protein foods. Do this with the remaining 3 females when they drop.

Set up another 2 20L tanks one for the conditioning females and 1 for conditioning the males.

Now this is where it gets complicated. Other than the 1 dropping pond (100L) you will require 2 more to separate sexes so they don't breed further. So you have 1 male grow out and 1 female grow out.

This is as many tanks as you will need for 1 particular strain unless you plan on more than one strain like Blue Moscows and Albino reds.

This is where the whole process changes.

If you plan to do this you will need 3 20L tanks and 1 male and 2 females of each strain.

The Idea of this setup is to get the females pregnant.

Place each trio into their own tanks and leave them in there for a week or until the females' gravid spots become darker. At this point, place the gravid females in the huge pond all at once. The males can now be fed high quality food in their tanks.

Leave the females in there and check up for females that have dropped. Once a female drops you can place her in a nice 40L to wait for the rest of the females. All these females must be placed in with the males together / on the same day!!!

The fry in the huge pond should grow by the time the females are gravid again (1 month) and sexes should be separated into smaller ponds to grow out another month and then be sold or whatever. Be sure to sort through each one and select good looking males that you can use for future breeding.

This is just a basic outline. If you want to mix up your strains, just 2 ponds are required. 1 for the breeding and one to grow out.
