Typically it is about two things ... surface area and how the media impacts the flow.

Now life gets tricky, because some have an internal + external surface are - like ceramics vs an external surface area only like hard plastic. But wait this is all ringing a bell .. I once tried to get a formula to evaluate what is best

But actually have a read in that entire thread - some good info, sadly that level of debate is missing on forums these days.

Thanks ok so what i was thinking of is first compartment filterrings and then a spong second one compartment and i am going to get the cascade 300

Are you looking at the Cascade 300 internal filter, or the Cascade 300 HOB?

Take out the charcoal filter pad.
Turn around the sponge pad so that it points backwards.
Fill the front part of the filter about 3/4 of the way with the rings.

Water moves from the left, through the sponge pad, then through the rings.
You will keep the rings in place with the biofalls attachment.

Place the filter in the right spot on the edge of the tank.
Start the filter with the lid open.
Pour water into the left portion of the filter immediately after starting.
You will hear the noise of the filter change, and it will start drawing water.
Put on the lid, and dial the flow meter until you have the right flow for your tank.

Enjoy your filter.
