Hu Guys and gals, good to be here, so much I can learn from various threads on this site.
I'm Neil, Cape Town, Kenilworth guy, after 2 years of getting out of this hobby I decided to get back into it, its just so relaxing and you don't have to leave home!.

About 3 and half months ago I bought myself a Juwel Rio 125 complete setup. Spiderwood from a shop display tank, quite pricey but I had to have it and decided to go community tank route as I have a pair of inquisitive young girls. Tank has been fairly stocked up, say 38 various fish and about 6 or so amano shrimp which I think are breading as we always spotting little new guys. and heavily planted. Pic attached hopefully if I succeed in doing so.

I have been in and out of the hobby, previously a Discuss fan and will always be, and probably end up there again.

I now have that classic problem, I want a bigger tank!. Kicking myself for not going that route when I started 3 and a half months ago. My tank is currently up for sale on Gumtree while I'm trying to source a Juwel Rio 240 or Vision 260 in white preferably, black will suffice if there are not any. If anyone knows where I can source one in the Cape Town area please give me a heads up. They are quite expensive but they do look the part, I don't mind the internal filter as I do weekly maintenance. Strangely I have not received a single call or email for my tank as yet??. Be that as it may I will be sourcing the replacement tank shortly and excited to start.

I'm not up to speed with names of some plant species but will learn lots on this website, thanks to all of you!.

    thanks for reading regards

    Neil

Thanks Guys, its as most of you would say "low-tech", I'm a bit old school in that I go with instinct with what the fish and plants are like.
New Tank won't be heavily planted though, going to try for more ground cover with some terracing. Not that I should ask here but does anyone know where I can calculate how many bags of ADA gravel for a 1,2 x 0,41 tank?. I've never used ADA before and from what I have read is the best for planted tanks, my default will be what I'm currently using now, Flourite. Thanks once again, appreciate the assistance.

As far as I know ADA is measured in litres (I think it comes in 3 and 6l) so calculate the volume you would like to fill and buy bags accordingly. ie:
Your tank is 1.2(l) x 0.41(w) x desired substrate thickness (I will assume for the calculation you want an average of 50mm)
so 1.2 x 0.41x0.05=0.0246m2 x 1000=24.6l therefore you would need about 4, 6l bags. Ouch! That will cost a bit...

You could always go for PFS and have "pockets/areas" of ADA.

Yup, this is why all my tanks are PFS. I cannot justify spending R3500 on substrate alone!

    Hi Neil,
Welcome here as we all had to start off somewhere, TASA is a great site to be a member of. Lots of help and ideas. You have a great looking aquarium there, as for not going bigger ????? I think we all make that sort of mistake some time. Some of us end up with multiple set ups/ tanks ........ Hehehe

    Thanks Guys....glad to be here!.

Got someone interested in my tank, fingers crossed he takes it!. Bring the new tank into reality, what to get???. I like the look of the Juwel tanks but I cannot for the life of me get over the price thereof. Other tanks are not doing it for me, they either to deep or way too shallow, have crapy canopies and lighting, terrible filtration and poor cabinets. the time I get around upgrading all the above I'd probably spend more than the equivalent of a Juwel 240/ 300. Forgive for not looking but is there an ideal depth for lighting in general (T5's) as I will attempt to go carpet for 60% of the tanks base?. Thanks guys for the help, it makes this hobby worthwhile.

Hi Guys, just a quick update, I finally received my new tank, most of you wont like the colour thereof, but it's a personal preference, will post a pic at a later stage when I get the plants i'm after...ground cover!!!. Co2 nearing completion, looking for a tank and tubing, then the fun begins.
Tank by the way is a Juwel Rio 240, standard with 2 x 54w T5 lighting, I added the reflectors, they do make a huge difference. Standard filtration with the addition of Matrix. Flourite black sand, might need to get additional bag and I need to ceate better mounds around my "canyon". Plants is all I could get and will be looking around.....any feedback will be appreciated, tips etc, etc. 2014-03-10 17.25.10.jpg2014-03-10 20.59.48.jpg2014-03-11 05.15.21.jpg
