My name is Lizelle and I'm started a new community tank.... I'm new to this and would like to get some help from you guys. I started with angels and would like to know what other fish I can keep with them. The people at the pet shop told me that I can keep tiger barbs with the angels, but apparently you can't...I'm confused. Can anyone tell me what else I can keep with the angels and where to find some great deals on fish....I have spend R300 today and only got 8 fishes :blink1: .....I'm living in Centurion!
Howzit Lizelle, and welcome to our wet world online..lol Let's start by asking what size your tank is? Angels are magnificent fish, but grow quite large and need a bit of space.... Tiger barb's are notorious fin nippers - you can cut this down by keeping them in large shoals of 10 +,but think the long flowing fins of an Angel will be just to tempting - especialy in a small tanlk Good tankmates for them are larger Tetra's like Bleeding hearts,Columbian and penguins(as well as many others...) - Also consider gourami's,Livebearer's like Swords, mollies and platies...
Welcme , apparently you also have a genius working at your LPS. Ignore most of their advice anyway. There are quite a few tetras you can keep with them without them becoming food. A good thing to do is to have a look at what you like and then googling a bit to see what kind of water they like and how big they get. 90% of all the fish in the store are still babies and some can grow HUGE. So decide, google, think again and then buy. Gerhard
Okey but I have a problem, I.ve bought 4 tiger barbs, is there anyone in Centurion who can swop them for mollies, swords or platies...please???
See if you can take them back to the LFS .. if they sold you all the fish in one go. Since it is clearly not compatible keeping these together in these numbers. Lizelle - what is the tank size and what filtration, substrate, plants lights are you planning ? Oh and stop buying fish till the tank has settled and you are 110% sure that your community plans will be that and not a slaughterhouse. Later F
My tank size is 1.2m wide x 45cm deep x 45cm high. I have a florecent light and some live plants (dont know the plant though, because someone gave it to me, it looks like what they call in afrikaans "hen-en-kuiken" but it is a water plant) I have kept guppies in the tank, so its up and running for about a year now, I have decided to make it a community tank and since my focus was only on guppies I have no idea what goes together. I definitely want the angels so thats my starting point. So you guys say that I can go for platies, mollies and swords. Great I love those fishes too!! Can I put some neons with them as well.
Hello and Welcome to TASA Lizelle. Will see you guys over the weekend. @Lizelle:The Plants is called Vallis and your tank is cycled.
Cool - so the live breeders are the food source in the community tank, at least the fry will be ... leave the guppies in - angles should keep the number in check. ... depending on the size of the Angles and if they grow up with smaller fish you might get away with neons and other smaller fish. The rule to be tested is simple: If it fits in the angles mouth chances are that it will become food at some stage. Thing about a community tank vs a species specific is that you need to start thinking layers and fish function. So you probably want something on the substrate, maybe a school of corries. Angles in the middle (since the water height is probably 40cm) and top side maybe danios. The live breeders are all over the place so that is cool. As the bioload increases you might need more filtration (be it more plants or internal, external filtration). Now we need pics ;-) Later Ferdie
