    I should also add.

    There are 2 types of sterilisers
    A UV which is what most people use.
    And there is also an ozone steriliser. I believe these ones, if used incorrectly, can cause problems

    Ozone is dangerous and only suitable for high tech aquaculture or for some reef aquariums. Not worth using in FW usually, and is usually used in skimmer form?
