Hi All, I'm another newby here. I recently started breeding bettas again (Well, long time ago tried breeding bettas but I guess without proper info I failed). Since I started again, 'bout three weeks ago, I already have three spawns, each a week apart in age. I'm always open to any new advise though. Es
Welcome to TASA Lula. Wow sounds like you're doing pretty well so far. What's the size of the spawns and survival rate looking like so far?
Hi Rory, The oldest spawn was rather small, only 50 fry, lost 3 to date. The second spawn is almos two weeks old now, started with 160 fry, lost 7 to date. The last spawn I don't have an idea how many...Lots LOTs LOTS, Lost about half of the fry, (had very sudden cold conditions) but it looks like there may be anything from 70 to 150 fry. I must also add that they are all from one female. She was a little eggbound after the first spawn, so I tried to put her with another male, hence the second spawn. After that she was still full of eggs/cysts, so I decided to rather leave her in daddy nr 1's tank again, well, Suprise suprise, more fry. I must also add that the male decided to not make a bubble nest this time, so I was rather sceptic whether the eggs would hatch or not!
Sounds like quite a female you have there... I struggled for a while to find a decent one when I bred bettas. Some males were also better than others at building nests. I remember one of them built a terrible nest and spent the next few days constantly picking up eggs and spitting them at the surface...
She is! She spawned a day after I got her. I currently have 2 males, three females (2 of them plakat, not mommy of the spawns though) and a whole lot of fry. Struggle to get anything but veiltails locally, but finally found someone that has a wholesaler friend that will supply me with Crowntails. Do you perhaps know of any breeders of Halfmoons etc? Rory, I looked at the SA Blacklist. I just wanted to know, is the Banded Tilapia also blacklisted? I couldn't seem to find it on there. I have 14 banded tilapia fry at home as well. (Thinking of releasing them though, they are messy!!) Es
Hi and welcome to TASA Lula I also breed Bettas but not as much as what I used to a few months ago. If I do one spawn per month it's much I've recently had a spawn and the fry are all still alive and well so far. I'll be moving them to a bigger tank tomorrow night if I'm not busy as the current tank is showing signs of an algae breakout. If I may ask, are you currently in contact with a lady in Cape Town who is arranging some Betta males for you? Cheers D
Singularity - Hi and thanks for the welcome! Dolphin - Thank you. Oh, I did a very stupid thing. I put the last spawn with the other two spawns (Each spawn differs one week in age) and at first everything seemed fine... but yesterday when I got home, the oldest spawn (3 weeks) must've seen the youngest (1 week) has a nice snack!!! I only have one left of that whole spawn!!! Well, learned my lesson there. Luckily the other two spawns live in peace together... Solex69 - Oh lovely! I also had to move my fry over to a new tank over the weekend, also because of a slight algae outbreak. Oh, and yes, I'm in contact with someone who is arranging some bettas for me in Cape Town. She will courier me some Crowntail males by the end of the month. I checked some of your previous threads, Love your boy George!!! He is absolutely stunning!
Ok, the person you're dealing with is getting the bettas from me I'll be bagging them for you and she will courier it. I know her very well. I've got another shipment of Halfmoons on order which should arrive within a week's time. They are all booked for, but if someone cancels, then I'll send one or two to you. Even though Halfmoons are beautiful, I personally feel that they are more prone for disease....just had my fair experience in this regard.
Oh, how funny! I should've thought as much when you knew I was in contact with a LADY! Yes, I'd be very happy if there might be one or two HMs left. I'd like to try with them, though I must say that personally Crowntails to me are much prettier. Oh, you can't imagine how I was struggling to find some. Tell me, you don't perhaps have any of Georges spawn left?? :wondering: Es
Unfortunately not, George passed on and Eskom killed his entire batch of fry You can just imagine just how upset I was The current fry I have is from a DT crossed with Cambodian female. I can't wait for them to grow up...would like to see what the yield on both finnage & colouration will be. I'll try and source you some DT & HM and send to you. Cheers D
Oh, no!!! George was really beautiful. Just received a mail from D. Didn't know you know her that well. :smile1: But thank you, I will be really glad. Tell me, the males your are sending, are they from your own stock or do you source them from somewhere else? Es
The males we're sending you on this occasion are sourced from a distributor we know quite well. His batch of CrownTails are normally very good quality. The DT & HM I get from another importer. I will make my own stock available once they are a bit bigger and ready to be shipped.
