    Hi.

Just started up my first community tank. Its small (only 80L). I am staying in Cape Town at the moment and have been looking for reputable stores to buy fish as well as accessories. I am new to keeping a tank so any advice will be appreciated.

My tank consists of: 1 clown Loach, Ghostknife fish, 2 plecos, 2 red tail sharks, 2 bala sharks and siamese fighter. My neon tetras have been eaten already!

    Good evening Amit...

Let me be the first one to welcome you to our humble abode...

Let me warn you right now... you are going to get a LOT of people saying that you going to have to take some of those fish back... and then stop supporting whichever pet store sold you those fish.

2 plecs in an 80 litre?? (They can grow to over a meter!)
sharks + siamese fighter = trouble.

Welcome Amid. With that list the neons would not last long.
I think but someone would have to confirm but your tank is going to get
To small for the fish you have.

    Enjoy it here!

    Hi Amit,

    Welcome (again) to TASA!!

Yes, those are quite a poor combination of fish!

For an 80L tank, basically the only fish that is not potentially going to grow too big is the Siamese fighter!!

Everything else can grow over 20 - 30cm and/or can be aggro with the other occupants!!

Sorry for the bad news, but here at TASA we feel morally obliged to let people know as softly as we can that they have been sold uncompatable fish!! Its a common problem that Fish Shops (LFS's) don't seem to care much about as long as they get a sale!!

    Cheers
    G!

Sjoe, an odd assortment of fish hey, Looks like you'll be persuaded into buying a bigger tank soon enough, lol, Welcome here on TASA

Maybe you could sell the bigger fish back to the LFS for credit, to get smaller, more compatible fishies...

    ok guys

My tank is small but i did buy my fish small as well. The biggest fish by far being the ghost knife at about 2.5 inches. once my fish get bigger i will move them to a bigger tank. I also realise that i have a strange assortment of fish but so far there has been no conflicts except for one of my red tail sharks dominating the other, as a result, it hides behind the filter all day(Advise?) i also forgot to mention that i also have a pair of swordtails and a glass catfish(should have gotten more than one).

Any advise on what i should keep or get rid of or what other fish i can get will be appreciated.

Its not that we are saying your tank small, I have a tank way smaller, its that your fish will be to big.
There are a lot fish that will live in that tank vey comfortable.

my advice is that the red tail shark should be re-homed, because if he continuously gets stressed by the other one, then odds are he is going to be susceptible to disease and parasites, most common being "white spot", and this is contagious with regards to fish...i'm not sure if re-introducing the red tail shark would help, but i'm sure other members can clarify if it would help...

I wouldn't waste time with those fish. Keeping fish like that in a small tank stunt their growth because they cannot grow to their potential growth. The mixture of fish are incompatible, and will result in stress, followed by disease outbreaks, and finally deaths.

You will land up feeling more disheartened at the hobby than rewarded.

    Welcome to TASA.
I agree with the others, not a great choice of fish in a tank that size.

    Update on Tank

    Hi guys.

Since getting my tank I have been researching a lot about Fish. (I know i should have done that before but I never expected LFS to NOT HELP with choosing fish)

Anyway, due to a tight budget I have decided to not get a bigger tank yet and to sell my larger fish. Not too sure where I can do this? Any advice?

I am looking to sell my 15cm ghostknife, what I think is a featherfin Sqeaker (8cm) and my 2 bala sharks (6cm).

    any advice will be appreciated
