    hi

my name is Gerald and i am from Durban. I am really keen on a fresh water aquarium as its a great hobby and very satisfying. Making a transition from speed and sound to being a aqua hobbyist should be fun and interesting, i hope.
I know that i am in the right place so i will look forward to meeting some of you guys.

    regards

    gerald

thank you for the warm reception. I need alot of help with this hobby, i did have a tank when i was in my teens but there seems to be alot more to the hobby than just buying fish and adding them to a tank of water. I will have a squiz at the sections to find out exactly what i will need to begin with and if i have any questions i will be sure to post. I don't want to ask silly questions that may have already been answered.

However where in durban can i buy a 4 foot tank. Are there any tank builders that i can connect directly?

    Hi welcome to TASA,

    Multi Tank Syndrome,

Try to buy the biggest tank you can start with or have space for cause you'll always want bigger, more...

lol okay i think i need to get with the program and learn the acronyms hehehe. I would love to get a 2m+ tank and space would not be a problem as our living area is quite large. But since i am new to this i will stick to a smaller size for now. I am not sure if i would take to the hobby as i have somewhat of a busy life style.

That was my intention as well starting small etc.. but once you learn more and starting to get more into things, it's a great hobby. Be sure to research the fish you intend on buying to make sure of their needs and eventual sizes and what tankmates they prefer as this can also influence your tank size and water conditions.
    Hope you get hooked..:blink1:

Yes they are lovely fish but not exactly calm they are actually an agressive cichlid specie so keep them with their own kind but rather do research on them because as far as I know you cant house all of them together but there are sites out there dedicated to specific species and malawi's..

    http://malawicichlids.com

There's a link to get you started..
