I want a gar for my new tank preferably small

Ignoring the potential legal issues ... the statement about "preferably small" seems misplaced when talking about GAR's -

but man the are cool looking fish.

Bigger question can you commit to setting up a trust fund to support this fish for up to the next 50 years "Alligator gar can live for many decades and the fact it can live for well in excess of 50 years" since relocating them once they are no longer "preferably small" might be a challenge.

The picture you posted is an alligator gar...

If you read Cesar's thread on the one he had... it will grow to about 1.3m in a year or less.
Don't make that mistake unless you have a pond in the pipeline where you know he can go to like Cesar did

If you determined to get a gar and you have a tank at least 2.5m by 900mm, then look for a Florida Gar or spotted gar however... these are very hard to find
As @f-fish says also be prepared for the food bill.... boy they eat.... as well as the fact that you limited to housing other big fish with it

So... think carefully before you let yourself into something like this
Once you have it and things go wrong, not many will take it off your hands
