Hi everyone, friends of ours approached me to set up a planted tank for them. Happy to do that

    - They don’t have any prior fish keeping experience, but understand very well that fish are not low maintenance pets. 2 kids ages about 5 and 7. I plan on guiding them towards easy peaceful community fish. They also really like the idea of an ecosystem between plants, fish, shrimp, snails etc.

    - very important to them that the tank, which will be in the lounge, must be a feature that enhances the area and is crystal clear. We have not yet discussed budget but I expect them to want to do it right first time. Design aesthetics are important to them.

    - my friend (the wife) will look after the tank. She is very competent in many different areas and we’ll have a series of conversations and education sessions before she settles on something she’d be happy with and would be happy to maintain. I’ve already sent videos on the nitrogen cycle as lesson #1, and will encourage her to join the forum if they do go ahead.

    - important to me that they have a good idea of maintenance required etc as well as the factors influencing budget. Will have our first proper chat on Tuesday and I’ve prepared talking points (see pics)

    - They have 70cm length available. I’ve asked for pictures of the location, and for max width. I suspect we’ll have a custom tank made up for her and will have to look at tank dimensions

    - is there anything else you think we need to discuss?

I also asked her to bring a sample of her tap water, suspect it will be soft

    Following. I see you have 70 x 40 x 40. Why not 70x 70 x 40 as another option?

Thanks yes totally an option. Would give a nice footprint if it fits in with traffic through the room!

Nice project and well thought out factors.
Generally speaking, I'd suggest a setup that is less prone to algae outbreaks (ie. low tech) as that can quickly put people off of things.
If you go custom, especially optiwhite, I'd also be wary of sand to start, unless you put forward the concern for accidental scratches and show them how to avoid that.
Especially if they're aesthetically minded in general, scratches can also really frustrate.

Foot print - just bear in mind ease of maintenance. Not sure if the tank height should consider their kids, but personally I'd try avoid bracing or thick glass. A standard 60cm Starfire, as at RBM, would be good as an in-store reference maybe?
Rimless or closed, also one to factor kids into. Even potential risk of contaminants from household cleaning products, depending on position.
Lighting will I guess be determined by closed or open top, but the usual Zetlight options would work?

Their CT water will likely be soft, so one will probably need to suggest a KH booster of sorts. If keeping shrimp, then perhaps something specifically optimised for them (combined KH + GH) instead of say Seachem Alkaline buffer.
Maybe hardness kits are not necessary, but with shrimp I'd want some. At the least, a TDS pen from Takealot. Crushed coral as a passive buffer might also be good, although I tend to only use powder buffers these days.

Substrate - I usually suggest a tried and true option like ADA or Langa, for planted tanks- they just need to be on top of the necessary water changes during early days. Or, something like Flourite Black and a couple root tabs as needed.
I've tried out the new Epic Aquatics ones and they work very well.

MTS - wary of that suggestion, as they became a nightmare for me after a while, multiplying like crazy! Took me ages to get them out once I reset the tank. I didn't have a Cory and shrimp cleaning crew though.

For stocking, I'd definitely advocate a staggered approach, keeping it light in general. Just minimises likelihood of problems.
I find that if one isn't experienced in the hobby, they sort of need to stay between the lines so to speak, taking a safe and steady approach. My primary mistakes, getting back in the hobby, were overstocking + lacking knowledge of hardness/ buffers (zero KH buffer, so pH dropped).
Also, a QT tank, but to start that isn't strictly really necessary. Maybe from the 2nd round of livestock?

Look forward to seeing it come together! Green Aqua channel will get anyone excited for a planted tank.

    Thanks for the valuable additions!

Based on the location photos she sent through, viewing angles are from front and the right. Thinking a triangular layout along the veins of my 65L might work great, super low maintenance too?

Space available Length of 70cm and max width 50cm but will clarify measurements. Leaving gaps on left and back for maintenance one is edging closer to a 2 foot tank, perhaps a bit wider than standard. Would be nice to get a bit more water volume going without making the tank too deep (perhaps 40-45). Hoping to get away with a Zetlight Aqua depending on tank dimensions.

Suspect they’d like rimless /open top, which gives another viewing angle (top), maximizing visual impact. With safety precautions for the kids (eg storing fish food where they can’t reach it and over feed etc). We’ll have to discuss all those things and weigh up options.

She is also on the short side so from a maintenance point of view cabinet height and tank height should defy be taken into consideration.

If that is a door there? Would make water changes easy to dump the water out there :)

Also another option is going rimless is a saltwater style jump screen at least that can stop larger items going in the tank. The DD jump gard is nice and low profile so won't take way from the look to much:thumbup:

I think their own kids are past the point of dumping random stuff in the tank, but if friends come visit it could be a potential issue? To be discussed thanks!

Also lucky that there’s already a plug point behind the curtain!

Is prime, stability and purigen absolutely necessary ? Reason for asking is that it’s quite costly setting up from scratch. I have personally never used these and have not had any problems or a need for these in the 13 years I have been in the hobby. Cost is a big factor when starting out .

Never used prime, stability . Using RO water? What do you use to remove chlorine from tap water if not using RO water. Stability great for starting up new tank and 'stability' when adding new fish, after wc's.

Unless you are using other water conditioners?

Your list is BIG - try and break it down into phases ... you do not want to scare them on day 1.

Custom stand with good weight distribution on that wooden floor.

In a lounge tank, everything needs to be hidden - so canister under the tank with either a fake enclosure, or a proper cabinet. Depending on lights .. timer. If it is an active use area, like a where the TV is, then lilly pipes to reduce water flow sound?

Yes those are very good points @f-fish , thanks! I’ve been thinking a lot about how to potentially manage information overload...
