    Hay every one

I would like to set up a cichlid tank. I am not sure to which ones to chose and how many. I have a 280l tank. I would like a a lot of movement and colour.
Is it possible to put a lobster or 2 with cichlids

    Thanks every one

    Hi there

Many cichlids are colourful, but if you want a LOT of cichlids with a LOT of colour, go the Malawi route. With any other cichlids, you're limited to, at most, a few pairs per tank. With Malawis, if stocked right, you can fit way more fish in, and have a vibrant community. What filtration do you have to work with?

And no on the lobsters - they're blacklisted.

    Regards,

What would you determine to be stock correctly? I would like to get a canister filter. I was using a DIY 2000l/h canister filter. but i always had leaks. so i would like to buy a new one.

Are all lobsters blacklisted. I have seen a few at the local fish store.

If you do go the Malawi route, do plenty of reading first.

They aren't that difficult, but they do have specific requirements.

Nope, they will shred them to pieces and uproot the ones they can't.

Malawi are aggressive and territorial. Most people put a large stack of slate rock in the middle of their tank, the malawi's each take a cave or a few for themselves and chase out any other malawi's that try to get in or are near.(this way they don't take half the tank for themselves and chase the weak ones into eachother's territories.)

It's important to get allot of them or else they will gang up on eachother, more = even spread aggression.
More filtrastion is always good for Malawi tanks because they are usually overstocked and the rocks take a fair bit of tank volume away,a large sump is ideal since it increases the tanks overall volume as well as providing excellent filtration and easy maintenance.Only downsides are that your tank needs to be drilled otherwise your tank will be drained when the power goes out and that the sump takes allot of space.

Make sure to research them properly, your tank will need a higher then average PH.

I know of 1 person who managed to keep Vallis growing with Malawis. Vallis does prefer harder water as well, so it can work with them if you start out with a lot of it.

Yep,cichlids are known to 'rearrange' their tanks.Oscars are especially moody, sometimes they would lay at the bottom of the tank or refuse to eat for a day or so just because you moved their favorite rock, plant or wood.Very curious fish.

Hmmm.....sounds like they would be right at home in my family!

(Will read up on them a bit, sounds like really interesting fish! Much too big for what I have going on this side, but surely worth the knowledge.
