Hi all. I'm setting up a new tank and need some help with the sump.

    Dimension of main tank: 1.5mx60x60
I want a built-in sump on the back which would be something like 1.5mx10x60

I need to know if this will work.

Also what type/model of return pump would I need? Will it fit? I could increase the width of the sump to 15mm and decrease the tank to 55mm, but will that be enough?

This is the first time I'm using a sump so any help/suggestions are welcome.

with all those spare compartments you could throw in lots of hornwort in one to help the nitrates etc in your tank..

I could probably fit in another compartment for some other media. The more the merrier. The heater will go in the first compartment.

I will add a few power heads in the tank for good flow.

Maybe get a cheap canister as well.

    One Question

How on earth are you going to get your hands in such a deep sump with a narrow opening like that to clean or get all the media out. I also have an internal sump on my 1000 liter and my sump is about 1600 x 120(w) x 200(h). I'll recommend not to go to deep otherwise you gonna struggle to get everything in and out

You know those netting bags that the carbon and ceramic rings come in? I was thinking of putting the media in there and then tie a piece of gut to that with a weight on the other end hanging out the tank. That would make life easier.

I suppose i could make it 30mm deep also. What return pump are you using Fonkie?

I have an eheim 3000 liter return pump - quite expensive but definitely worth it.

my filter actually worked better with the filter in the last compartment..the water in the 1st compartment took too long to get back into the tank so the heater was off most of the time BUT the tank wasnt near what it was meant to be..

good idea though.. i would do it if i were u.. just be aware though, if u sectioning off the area with perspex, it could cost as much as a good external filter...

I was thinking of using glass all round. Will get some quotes and see. Thanks for all the input.

mx, chat to me...and keep in touch!

With the efficiency of modern filter media choices and overall Biofiltration design..you are WASTING space on many superfluous sections.

Redundancy is a GOOD thing, but not when No Value added .

Also work on an airpowered backup, for a simple airlift to circulate water, maintain viable biofiltration and some valuable gaseous exchange for your fish..ok!

    sharp!

Looks like you could do away with the extra compartment. Rather keep it as simple as possible. And make sure you've got enough width to fit your entire hand into the sump all the way to the bottom.

You could possibly try using single pieces of glass instead of the double separators, and then put your media into little plastic baskets made out of that garden mesh with 6mm to 10mm holes.

well what u could also do is:
    1st compartment - filter floss
    2nd compartment - bio sponges
    3rd compartment - ceramic rings
    4th compartment - bio balls
5th compartment - heater and pump?

one problem i can see here is that the filter floss may be getting dirty and restricting flow which leads to a dry pump..

i also suggest then lessening the compartments..

Taking all the advice into account, I think I'm going to go with 4 compartments. Also going to reduce the height and maybe increase the width. Will post updated plans later.

But again, if you read the filter flow rate thread that Zoom linked, you'll make even less compartments...

Must say - Prof's horizontal, layered filter is growing on me .... a derivative could even work here. 2 chambers. 1'st chamber; tank overflows onto a long 1.3 meter sponge - under that more media - under that a grid that allows draining to the 2'nd return chamber that holds the pump and heater.

Okay I went through the whole filter flow thread now and yes what the Prof suggested makes sense. Going to work on it now.
