Hey guys. I am trying to breed bettas and have my male and female in a divided 60l tank. The male has always had a bubble nest under the bubble wrap (about 3/4 weeks of this set up) until recently I noticed that his bubble nests are becoming one giant bubble??!! I will try and post pics later but have been quite busy recently.

    P.S. Happy birthday to me!!!!

Happy birth day to you, hope u had a good 1. Sounds kind of weird, but my guess will be because of the bubble wrap he is just blowing more air into the current bubble and it cant pop cause the bubble wrap blocks the air from coming out....maybe?

    Hi @FishLover

I have never used the bubble wrap method to be honest, sticking to ye good old styro cup, but I gess it has to do with the bubbles, as far as I am aware, none of the bubbles last forever, which is why the male continuees to blow bubbles throughout, to replace those that eventually pop. I'm guessing the larger bubble could then be formed by the accumulation on the air from these popped bubbles, as the air has no way to leak out, being trapped by the bubble wrap above, and the water and unpopped bubbles on the sides.
As for a solution, you could somehow leave one side raised ever so slightly, but not sure how to accomplish it, or how it would affect the formation or creation of the bubble nest, try sending a pm to @keith1964, I believe he also uses the bubble wrap method, and may have a more accurate answer for you, instead of what is at least on my part ust a guess.

Good luck and hope to hear that things are going well and your raising a new spawn soon.

I have been using the bubblewrap method on all my spawns and had great success. It makes it easier to observe the eggs hatching and males tends to image that the bubblewrap is like a nest. During the fews days after hatching and fry becomes free swimming I would carefully release some tension from the bubblewrap.

I have also been using Atison Betta Spa/Kent Blackwater, which keeps the bubblenest firm. See if the bubblewrap method work or try the styrofoam cup method, I have not yet used this method but will try with my next spawn pair. What make it interesting with the bubblewrap, the male think is it a nest and he then just start making his nest. Some of my male bettas made such a big nest that the bubblewrap started to lift from the water surface. The eggs also get suspended midway out of the water just keeping the eggs moist. Once eggs start to hatch the wrap tends to gather in the grooves of the bubblewrap. From the top you would just see black little eyes in the grooves.

    Hi

I agree with Keith and Hennie. Nest is fine, don't stress. The main thing with betta's is patience. The Atison's BettaSpa and Black Water works well to strenghten the bubble nest, bubble's keep longer. I spawned with and without it, just ensure there is not a draft flowing into your tank when you lift the lid otherwise the bubble's pops fast and destroys the nest. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Takes about 36 hours for fry to hatch, obviously fry that gor fertalised first will hatch first, so it could take up to 3 hours later between the first hatches and the last, depends how big and how long the spawn was. then 3 days to go free swiming, 1 day on infusoria, next day you can start bs and mw, you can also feed micro worms from first day of free swiming, if the fry is lucky enough to find them, as they just fall to the floor, and betta fry remains on the surface for the first couple of days. So start your culture on the day they go free swiming, or just before, depends on room temp and quality of bs on how long bs will take to hatch. And yes normal table salt can be used with no problem.
