    Hi all

    im in panic mode

    my Ram has white spot!!!
Does this mean the whole aquarium is infected?
what can I do to sort it out?
I read to push temps to 30 degrees!
will the rainbows and tetras handle that?

all LFS are closed now and cant get any meds :-(

Take a deep breath. No rush here. Unfortunately there is a big possibility that it is in the tank now. Best is to treat the whole tank. Slowly increase the temp to 30, over a day, and start dosing salt. Leave temp at 30 for 10 days and then start decreasing it to normal. Add extra surface movement as oxigen will be less in the hotter water.

The other fish will be fine with the higher temp. Good luck

Awesome thread, i shall follow the instructions. Hopefully my plants also survive this. Tank has been doing so well so far. Lesson learnt though, there is a catch to buying plants at R14 a pop. I would rather buy from members at double price in future.

    Sorry about your fish @Ammar

As @pierreschoonraad said, take a deep breath and you should be fine

I am also a firm believer in the heat and salt method, in fact, because there are rays and clown loaches in our tanks, its the only method we trust
Remember though to carry on with water changes, in fact increase to every say.. third day and do as good a gravel vac as possible to pick up what ever falls to the floor
After water change, replace salt to bring back to your dosage

I must also add that I have used normal table salt on numerous occasions on very sensitive fish with no ill effects to the fish as the small amount of iodine is not enough to do them any harm

What i usually do is, to start off with, I raise the salinity in stages over a few hours. I never add the full dose all at once but, that's just me, other people do it all in one go

    All the best

Thank u so much, so how do i know how much salt is enough? I read 1 tea spoon per 4 litres does that sound right?

I have 550 litres so i could add salt every hour ... 1 teaspoon per hour ?

Sorry @Ammar for the late response...

Hope all s going well so far

I usually do 2 tablespoons for 5 gallons (18.5l) which is more or less a teaspoon per litre

I have gone to 3 tablespoons to 5 gallons about two years ago when i had a real stubborn ich outbreak with my clown loaches and everyone was fine
I must say that (touch wood) since we added the UV lights/sterilizer to the tanks, we have never had an ich outbreak again

thanks all for your help, what a mission to maintain 30 degrees temperature in the tank.. i have 3 heaters ( 2 X300w , 1 X 200W) in there and for some reason 30 is not being reached.
but i am running 4 airstones and an internal filter with an air intake, so lots of movement in the tank.
the fish seam ok, they are more active than normal, im assuming this is because of the temperature.
i was running my tank at about 22 to 23 degrees before this which is probably why i got hit in the first place. Local LFS runs all their tanks at 27, I thought is was a bit high but seems like fish are happier at slightly higher temperature.

My corries are taking a bit of strain, they used to be much more active at lower temps.

to my surprise plants are doing really well at the high temps.. hoping the salt will not knock them out

Good to hear it is working. The higher temps speeds up the life cycle of the parasite so if it is not 30 it isn't the end of the world. They salt will kill them when they dislodge from the fish

currently only my rams look infected.. but they dont look too bothered at the moment. I'm a bit calmer about it LOL.
just 1 question... do I keep feeding as normal or cut down a bit? I usually feed morning and evening, on weekends they get bloodworm as a treat :)
