Now my bettas have decided to breed, but the male is being really odd about it. He built a bubblenest (very badly) and it didn't hold properly. He squeezed the eggs out the female and had nowhere to put them other than a few bubbles in a corner. What can I do? Will he learn from this sad attempt at a bubblenest?

Whisper there is not much you can do at this stage. He'll eventually learn from his mistakes and get it completely right :) I assume that you do not have too much surface movement and that you have some plants etc where he can anchor his nest to?

    Hi Whisper

He will probably learn very quickly. You can help him along by putting something in the tank that floats so he can build his nest under it and not just on the water surface. Need a supporting structure.

Another thing is to introduce the female but not directly into the tank and remove her again a few times untill he have constructed a proper nest.
I would use a glass bottle with the label properly removed and not to big.

I also used a Styrofoam cup on breeding my blue gourami's. It creates a steady surface area under the cup that the male will use for his nest

Thanks guys. I used a piece of bubblewrap and introduced the female in a clear plastic container first. His bubblenest looks much better than before and things appear to have gone well with the whole procedure. I have removed the female and the male is now guarding the nest so hold thumbs that the eggs hatch :)

Just an update. I have a couple of fry that have survived I'm really happy with them. they are all white so far and it looks like they will stay that way? its been 6 weeks since they've hatched. Female was a white double tail (with turquoise shimmer on her fins) male was a red and white mix.
