    Hello everybody,

I joined a little while ago but have been mainly browsing, this is my first post.

I have kept many aquariums since about 1990 but had a break for two years. I am now thinking of re-starting a 120(L) x 45(W) x 60(H) sleeperwood cabinet tank I still own. I would like to try Discus but don't have the time to give the attention required. I have no problem with twice daily feedings and weekly water changes but know that Discus will require far more than that. Previously I have kept community tanks and oscars but would like to try something different. I have been racking my brain but can't seem to make up my mind. Any suggestions?

    Welcome DarylA ..

What filtration you plan on running - and a 60 H tank will need loads of light if you want plants. Or are you more into hardscape no plants?

Either way - start it up, chuck some guppies in it and get the tank going .. the rest will find it self.

    Hi Vis & f-fish,

I was thinking of a planted biotope type aquarium since I have not tried this before. Filtration will be covered by an older Fluval 404 canister which has hardly been used and an ancient Project 800 canister which needs a little TLC but which was still working the last time I checked. I realise I am going to need some serious lighting due to the depth and the fact that I want to use CO2 for the first time as well. Still researching my best options with regard to the lighting as well as substrate. I have some beautifull driftwood which I have used before but which probably needs re-treating since it has been standing outside with my water feature for the past +/- 2 years. My indecision comes in with regard to the specific biotope I am going to set up. I like the idea of an amazon tank stocked with angels, a large school of tetra( not sure which yet), bristlenose, shoal of corydoras and maybe some hatchets. However, I am also considering an african tank with some oddballs like ropefish, elephant nose, butterflyfish etc. with Congo Tetra. To confuse myself further, I love the look of a big school of tiger barbs and despite the issues with plants might go this route with redtail shark, hardy gourami, etc. I don't know why i am so indecisive but do know that I want the tank to be a stunner. What you guys keeping at this stage?

    Hi DarylA and welcome...
Hmmn...Biotopes,and the choices....he,he - to me this is half the fun of fishkeeping. The planning before the exocution thereof... Want a stunning planted system? Start by reading the Prof's thread on PFP and chemicult...good start!

    Hi azurekoi,

Thanks for the welcome and heads up, will be checking it out. You are so right about the planning being great fun but it is also of the utmost importance. What is it that is said.... failing to plan is planning to fail. LOL.

hi and welcome. Amazon bio-type is awesome well i think, angels and tetras are wicked. on a 600 deep tank, T5 lighting will work, lots of ppl with reef tanks grow corals very successfully with T5 lighting on tanks at that depths.
