Excited to find an active community to talk shop with. I’ve had my 500 gallon African cichlid tank running for about 8 years now and I’m about to upgrade my sump due to a persistent leak.

anyone tried the felt roller systems?
the new sump has a refugium section any thoughts on good plants for that ? Are they necessary as I have an auto water change system set up. Nitrates have never been an issue. I may just use this area as a hospital tank. Since treating near 700 gallons is crazy expensive .

another question my current sump has a drip tray over the bio ball media. The new does not but I could easy fix that thoughts on to drip or not to drip.

    Welcome @DrWupass

I for one are most interested in your African cichlid tank. Do post pictures when you get a chance. Regarding the sump @Whoknows may be able to answer your questions with accuracy.

Looking forward to seeing more from you

Yes I also have such great appreciation for when a tank is so well integrated into a living area and becomes a feature

I built the house with the plans of having a 250 gallon tank there. But when I was ready to set it up this 500 gallon fell in my lap and I couldn’t resist ! I had to beef up the floor a bit more for the added weight but it was meant to be. I’d make you all sick if I told you how little I paid for it.

    Sorry for the late reply.
I haven't personally used a roller filter but from what I've heard they are great usually only needed new rolls one every 3 months but this depends heavily on your stocking level. If you want to use one make sure you have enough room above the sump and in the first chamber.

Refugium in freshwater not as good as in marine so I'd rather fill with matrix or some other good quality bio media. Also wouldn't be a good idea to use as hospital tank since sump still forms part of the main display system you'd still need to treat the whole volume. Infection can still move up to the tank. Rather set up a small tank for this like a 3ft.

As for the drip tray I'd say leave it off

Thanks for the reply. I’ll post pics of the new sump later today as long as it’s not broken when it gets her later today. Fingers crossed

Well new sump with dual felt roller pre sump installed and running. I’ll probably replace the bio balls with ceramic media eventually. My old system was a drip system so it’s what I have.
