    Hi

I need to heat a bare discus tank of 460l. the sump is 95 litres, making 555l in total

    Jaeger 300w = 600l - 1000l
    jaeger 250w = 400l - 600l
    jaeger 200w = 300l - 400l

    should i heat the aquarium with 1 x 300w heater or 1 x 250w heaters or 2 x 250w etc?

I would say... seeing as you live in one of the colder parts of our country... Go for the 300W option. I asume that you will be moving a high volume of water per hour (6-10 times tank volume) through your sump. Taking into consideration the size of your tank you should be keeping your temperature easy with a 300W. However if you are intending to move 4 times the tank volume or less I would rather opt for the 2x 250W option. My 5c worth... HTH

I would go with the 300 watt option. I've used many Jaegers and find them very reliable.
    Don't pay more than R300,00

    2 is like a safety net :) so I say 2x 250W option

You never know when a heater might go in the middle of the coldest winter night.

@Juddy... You are probably right. I use two 300w Jaegers on my 2m for that reason, but I am seriously neurotic.

Do you know anyone that supplies 250watt Jaegers... Just as a matter of interest?

I would vote for 2x300W Jagers, 1 in display and 1 in Sump as a back-up.
Tune the 1 heater slightly at a lower temperature as the other and it will act as back-up when the other heater should fail.

i would say 2X 250w heaters, someone on the forum once suggested that the one is set a few degrees lower than the other, so that if the one fails, the other would kick in and you'd also be made aware of it, by seeing that the back-up is on. i think that is a good plan.

I agree with spider . one in the sump and one in the tank , i run both my 6ft tanks this way . but i would get one 300 w for the tank and the 250w in the sump as a back up to save costs .

How deep is your sump and tank, because those 300watt jagers are very long.

    I agree with spider.

@bruno_mad I run my 250l discus tanks on 1 300w Jagger and it seems to be working fine at 30-31deg constant temp, were it comes to backup heaters I have 5 lying around (not jaggers if you were wondering) as I believe every one should have back up’s and if any discus keeper is worth his salt you are always checking your tanks way to many times in a day than is absolutely necessary anyways so you will see a fluctuation. The only time I put in one of the backups is when I go away or know the weather is going to be really bad but then again the cape temp hardly ever drops lower that 5-8 deg at night and discus can withstand a gradual temp loss as far as the prof has told me till about 23-18deg min but then you have to bring them back up just as gradually again. @DirkBellstedt correct me if I am wrong please.
So I would sagest getting to 300w and use the cheepie that you prob already have or get one as a back up for when you think is necessary, You are going to need it for heating you water change water in any case.
    Well that’s my suggestion.

    Regards

    Jason
