I used it in some smaller tanks just for the sake of using it. I wouldn't use it on big tanks with a heavy plant mass. I'd use the Seachem stuff or the Tropica stuff that QA is going to be bringing in.

The question that should actually be asked is how does Algae Wizard get such good plant growth in his tanks?

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Firstly, let me apologize to Kathie for hijacking the thread completely.

I have formulated an aquatic fertilizer used by many members of the forum, and which in a clandestine way has become known as Dirk's Secret Druppels, alias Dirk's Aquatic Fertilizer. I originally formulated this for use in the Western Cape where none of the commercial aquatic plant fertilizers worked and still do not work. However, my ferts were never aimed at aggressive feeding of plants with nitrogen and phosphate, instead the aim was that the fishes supply the nitrogen and the phosphate. However, the high lighting that is becoming more and more available means that the plants actually grow faster than the fishes can produce the nitrogen and the phosphate. As a result, I have been experimenting extensively for the past 8 months at developing additional ferts that contain additional nitrogen and phosphate.

The new improved DSD will therefore not only consist of the previous two components but also additional components containing nitrogen phosphate and potassium (chemical formula = K, afrikaans = Kalium), which then give us the NPK abbreviation as it is used in traditional fertilizers, and has been referred to by slagter. The important thing that has come out of these developments is that the NPK addition has a huge effect on bringing out the red coloration in plants which is something that other ferts have not achieved.

So, Henk, the new ferts range will be a sort of DSD with techron. It will consist of the traditional two solutions as I mentioned before and then a number of additional fertilizer solutions for the aquatic plant lover. As you know, I do not use CO2 and even then, this new fertilizer combination gives fantastic results, even if I say so myself.

I want to show you a pic of a plant grown under non-CO2 conditions with the addition of my new fert combination. This is Limnophila aromatica, a plant which is supposed to only grow if you use CO2, but I am growing this very well without CO2.

Currently I am aiming for a release of these ferts onto the market in about a month from now and am currently sorting out bottling and labels.

I hope to be able to bring you more news soon.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

So to be clear, your original Two bottles will not be redundant, but will remain the same, but it will be supplimented from additional bottles?

Like the Pic! What is the substrate on this tank? The one we were discussing previously?

    Cheers
    Big G!

    Hi Gareth,

The plant feeding mix, i.e. the traces will stay the same, but there will be two solutions instead of one for the hardening mix. It has turned out that this is essential for areas which have a certain degree of hardness in their water, in the Western Cape we have no hardness and in other areas in SA they do have a little and this has required an adjustment so that the ferts can be used everywhere in SA and elsewhere as well.

And yes, then there will be additional bottles and I have also developed additional mixtures if you want to use CO2 so that you can increase you carbonate hardness, which is essential in areas such as Cape Town where we have no carbonate hardness, without this solution the use of CO2 would cause massive pH fluctuations.

The substrate in this tank is as we had discussed earlier yes.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Hi all

    I almost missed this thread...

I am currently dosing the original DSD and have been for a long time now. I recently started to supplement this with my own mix of KNO3 and KH2PO4. I currently dose this in a ratio of 5:1 and I still get GSA, which indicates low P or too much N. This is because I am growing a Marsilea Crenata carpet. I will post pics on my tank thread soon. I know Marsilea is a major consumer of P so if I go the route of using Dirk's new NPK solution, how will I control this ratio? After this week's WC, I will change my ratio to 5:2 and see if I still get GSA.

Prof Dirk, do you have any L. Aromatica for sale yet? :)

Brilliant Professor! I have been waiting very patiently for the NPK stuff to hit the market! I also find it incredible that you are growing the L. aromatica without the aid of Co2... Have you ever tried growing Pogostemon stellatus without Co2, on your new formula? That would be something indeed!!

I seriously cannot wait for the new formula to be commercially available.

I received the plants amongst which the L aromatica was from Angus Shippey (algae wizard) and included was also a small piece of Pogostemon stellata. It took a bit of a hammering during transport, but it is growing, WITHOUT CO2, yes!

I have some Pogostemon stellata "broad leaf" on order from Quality Aquariums and I will experiment with this as well.

I have hogged this thread badly enough, and I think I will start a separate one on the new ferts soon.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
