So my x-ray tetras where eating their eggs and then stopped spawning.

I read an article about hand spawning goldfish. I wondered if I could do it with tetras.

At first I was really afraid to hurt the fish until a just picked the female out of my net. Just a slight squeeze and she released some of her eggs.

I quickly put her back in the tank, thinking she would still spawn....1 hour later and nothing...

I then got a polystyrene cup and cut the bottom off and used that for a spawning cup. I filled it with some of the water from the tank and squeezed the eggs out of the female.

I then quickly got the male and squeezed him gently in there as well.

Now, I have no idea if I just blew my whole spawn.

    Has anyone tried this?

I will post the results of this method after the eggs hatch....

Oops! TM.... I'll be surprised if your x-rays will still be alive tomorrow..... Hand spawning is for specialists and then only for larger fish... (Talking Kois and the likes) If they were busy spawning, this intervention will definitely have stopped the activities, and as I said.... may be fatal to both of your fish.

    Oh Sh..

But They are doing fine at the moment. Swimming as normal.....

If they don't make it, i would not advise people to do this.

They don't seem like they are on the verge of dying. I just hope the eggs hatch. I am not trying this again.

I actually tried this with tiger barbs and they lived . . I don't see why my tetras wont live?

Rather let them do it the natural way.

I don't see why it is a crime? The best Asian fish breeders use this method with their most prized of fish. I am never doing this again just because I am uncomfortable handling the fish in that way . . . .

I don't think it's a crime. But maybe thats because I'm used to the idea of animals and in this case, fish, being helped along the way (I'm a vet student ok!) Sometimes its necessary. My 2c for what its worth (definately not a chappie, thats for sure)

Adult goldfish are much more solid and robust and you can do this with them, but for small tetras I would expect that you would injure them very easily. This is also a very stressful exercise and I would not recommend it for this reason alone.

Tetras are so easy to induce to spawn that I would not bother. Just condition the fishes properly and then do a large water change and they will spawn on the next day, no problem.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Thanks professor!

I don't plan on doing this again. I guess they stopped in the middle of spawning because they were not conditioned well enough or long enough. I will remember this next time I decide to breed them. That's like in a week or two.
