Okay so I started a guppy tank (60L endlers) early in April. Being used to Goldfish I was not prepared to cope with all the offspring. Guys I thought that perhaps they will give birth like once a month, at last count the infestation of fry in my tank was around 50+ and the females are still popping out babies at an alarming rate.

So this weekend I'll have to set up another tank for the fry to act as a growth tank. So for any experienced guppy keepers/breeders what are my options? Should I get a 3 ft tank or maybe 2 x 1.5ft to keep the males separate from the females.

The bigger the better. When they are small, you can't tell the males and females apart. I have the same problem with my mollies.

Unless you are planning on doing something ( like selling them or using them as live food) I would say just let it be, drop you tank temp - anything above 18 and they will still breed and grow, just much much slower. They do get to a balance at some point ....

I separated the males and females from the beginning and I'm doing selective breeding. I do sell the surplus of guppies in gumtree.

I was thinking of keeping the nice fry in the main guppy tank and donate the rest to the local petshop, obviously if I get really good quality endlers then I might sell/trade them for store credit. My goldfish will be too slow and lazy to feed of the fry :(

I had a angel that grew on baby guppies and later it ate my neons as well.

Interesting .. so R10 a pop seems to be the going price ... not bad actually. I can see how one could fund your hobby with this, just did not think it would be such a hit. Then again I am a bricks and mortar shopper.

Well, if everybody is going to start breeding and selling guppies, the supply will be more than the demand. R10...R9...R8...

Ok Saturn, change in plan - get 10 IBC ... you should be a millionaire in no time. ;-) Wonder how many guys in SA have tried to make the fish keeping hobby pay for it self, never mind make a business from it.

Good on you, do you breed to a specific strain or just mongrels like me?

True but you have to remember sometimes these guppies are bought as feeders. Usually I prefer it if they do not indulge in telling me that info I'm just to much of a softy.

I'm actually working towards strain breeding. Already have guppies that breed pure, other than that I'm working on my own strain for now.
