    Hey,

Im new to the whole fish keeping thing, and ive started off with guppy's as i like the whole idea of the live breading and being able to see the fry grow up (i know other fish mate too, but the easiness of guppys is what lured me in)

    Anyhow HERE COMES THE QUESTION.

I recently brought a female guppy (not because of its colour or anything, its quite plain) but because of its fins. Now i have two questions..

    1) Why are the fins shaped this way, is it a rare?(If you get rare shapes, because i haven't really seen any other guppy's with this fin shape)

    2) Will its fry most likely have similar fin shapes?

Here are some pics to show you what im talking about[look at the fins(not sure if its actually called fins) under the belly of the fish, to me they look extremely long? or have i just not seen that many guppys]:

Anyhow i just found them oddly long, so was wondering about them.. :)

    Thanks

nice looking guppy. The males normally show more of the shaped fins. Rare to see long fins in a female.

Interesting female - your fry should come out 50% normal 50% long fins depending on the females genetics. Keep an eye out and keep us updated please...

She also has good colour !!!!

You might have something there, keep line-breeding with her offspring and you might end up with your own family of long fin guppys.

They come in now and again

Glad to see even PE gets It's share of WEIRDOS
    The FISH, I mean!!!!:p

I see these, ever so often either in 'mixed' SHOW GUPPY OR deliberately ordered in as "VEILTAIL SHOW GUPPIES''
Either way, CORRECTLY classed as EXTENDED FINS.

    Fins notably affected:
    Pectoral
    Pelvic
    Anal

    IN THAT CLASS WE FIND:
"Ribbon" and "Swallow" which expresses itself in females (like yours) adequately for display and breeding.
Have a look at World Guppy Contest Judging Standards , mostly from pg 14-19

More info, some guidance, a few more questions , and helpfully pics of fish much like yours can be here
Specifically from a longtime breeder who developed his OWN "Veiled Lebistes" from..... ???
YUP, you guessed it, ONE Extended Fin female.
Only thing is; it spontaneously arose in his own stock, while you bought yours from an LFS.

enjoy reading about, keeping and breeding your little weirdo:bigsmile:
