I decided to revamp one of my tanks last night .... The idea will be to turn this into a 2/3 aquarium and the top 1/3 emmersed plants .... Search for - Lucky 13 - thread and see why I like this idea.

Anyway at about 23:00 I done most of the revamping ... fish back, plants replanted & new substrate etc .. Now I like the concept of having your wast not in the water column. In the past my H2O half round with such a configuration has proved its ease in maintenance and tank health. I also used the concept of moving the filter out of the water column before - my convict tank. But what to do at 23:00 at night hmmm...

Dug around and found an old guppy breading hang-on container, power head, some hydroton and my filter media of choice; clothing batting. I add a peace of glass on the base (direct the water flow in the container) used a spray bar.

Looking through old posts and saw this one, way before I joined.

How did this filter work out for you? Great Idea, Seems simple but still like it does the necessary.

Get the water to flow correctly and it will be a great little filter

It was a real winner ... only issues was the amount of heat loss back then.

    Simplicity is overlooked sometimes.

Thinking about it I should probably do this for the convicts tank again and use the canisters where I need less aeration.. Hmmmmmm

Now you have me thinking about a few things, thanks for digging up the thread.

I also use something like this in my outside goldfish tank. What is different that I have placed a guppy tank in one corner with the filter medium and in the other corner the pump placed in another guppy tank. This is the easiest kind of filter to maintain.

Trickle filters work very well, due to the high aeration you get. Boyu tanks use the same. My 1,5m boyu stocked with well fed Malawi cichlids still works well with only this filtration.
