Though I'd start a thread to help us breed guppies faster and better, as questions in our individual threads may be overlooked.

My first question is, what should I feed newly dropped fry to get em growing the fastest that I can?

Let me translate for you. He is raising them on baby brine shrimp and a very fine granule food imported from Germany by Prof Dirk.

Next question I have is, how do you know which genes will be carried forward? Are some genes stronger than others? I realize that genealogy is a complex field, but the sites that I've seen so far are either very scientific, while others are just casual observations. Anyone found a nice site that makes it easy to understand?

Think genetics is a topic that you either commit to (i.e. do loads of research) or take the lcuky packet mix as it comes ... load on the net about it.

Genetics/Crosses by Tom Allen | Guppy Associates International Chicago
    Table of Guppy Color Genetics

even some serious research Genetic linkage map of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, and quantitative trait loci analysis of male size and colour variation | Proceedings of the Royal Society of London B: Biological Sciences

    even spotted some gluetubes ...

Haha... I knew that Ferdie would be quick off the mark:). I kinda expected that genetics is a huge field and it would be arrogant to think that you could get answers in one post. Was just pushing my luck to see if anyone had like a guppy specific chart for dummies:)

Very interesting yes! are there strains that are more rare or saught after, my thinking is that if there are so many of us who are interested in doing this thing, then why not try those rare strains or something like that and see how different crosses pan out -totally new to the guppy thing so excuse my ignorance!

Dammit @Vis you started something now Bud! I can already see my wife shaking her head and looking at me funny!

Genes can be funny and differ from fish to fish.
Some trades are carried on the y gene so only your males can carry that gene forward etc

There are some guidelines towards color and patterns but you will have to learn from your own fish.

There is a really nice website with breeding strategies and more, will look for it and post the link.

I bought a pair of black guppies about 3 weeks ago. The pair weren't doing well at all after about a week. I thought this had to do with them being a weak strain or something, as I'd seen one or two dead ones at the LFS as well. The male of this pair then went MIA, so I bought another pair and some Seachem Metroplex. I treated by soaking their tetra pellet food in this. They improved almost immediately, with both females fattening up nicely and the male becoming nice and active.
I just thought I'd mention it, in case anyone buys those black guppies in Gonubie, and also to find out if internal parasites are a common problem with guppies?

It's not that expensive. I bought some BS eggs, SP1 and SP2 from Dirk a few months ago, it lasts a very long time. Although I feed SP2 daily, I've still got enough to last me a long time still.

Linxie I think cliffy might have been referring to bbs eggs generally available.

Aah ok, perhaps yes. I can't remember what I paid Dirk for mine, but well worth the price. Large hatch rate and they hatch very quickly.

They are expensive no matter the source but the ones from Dirk is of high quality and better priced than the rest.
