What size are the fry? They will only accept foods like these at 2cm+

Bloodworms are a better option. They wont go at the food like goldfish but inspect and nip off when they feel like.

Live or frozen, whichever you have. Place a bucket of that green water outside with a few guppies. Mosquitos and Midges will lay eggs, mosquito larvae will be eaten but bloodworms will hide in the substrate.

If fed in small portions beef heart if very good for your fish, but it must be a treat, once a week and what ever is not eaten must be removed from the tank immediately.

Hi Donny. I happen to disagree with you. It depends entirely on the species of fish you keep. What other food will be used as the basis of a feeding regime? Flakes? Beef heart is perfectly safe and good for fish, as long as it is a quality product that you can trust.

I didn't say its not but you cant have beef heart as the only sauce of food. I kept predatory fish. And used shrimp tail to supplement there diet as well.
Left over beef heart does pollute the water quickly.

Woolworths Beef Heart :D hahahaha... just joking.

I've seen chicken heart recently. Is this an alternative to beef heart?

I used to feed my bettas sheep kidney when I first got them.

My Discus should be ready for grated beef heart in the next month.

TM, you should read the Sticky note in Prof.'s forum on Discus feeding. Chicken heart? Not sure. I know in places Turkey heart is used. Donny you are right that it can foul tank water very quickly! So yes, as to that one should beware. Also, some places (RSA included) feed hormones to cattle that is bad for fish. Buy European Beef heart as they are much stricter. Prof. Dirk has an excellent blend that he sells! Its the only one I use. One should, as you say Donny, not ONLY feed heart. But out of 5 to 8 feedings I feed per day one to two consist of beef heart. Regards, Marco

Its interesting to note that cattle and pigs can carry tapeworms. The cysts can be found in various organs. Closer observations show that pigs are are a higher risk of carrying tapeworm cysts.

This might be fatal to the fish. Any opposite sentiments?

Hi Asgar. I have no idea or info on that. To be honest, I would not feed pig heart to fish. There has been a great deal said and written about beef heart but it still remains a great food for carnivorous fish. @TM- Yes I feed the Prof's Granulets. It took a while for my fish to eat them but now they graze on it as it lies on the tank bottom. One thing I can say - Prof's flakes are the only flakes my Discus eat. They love it! Regards, Marco

Hi shaun. Hole in the head is actually caused by a Vit. C deficiancy. It was previously linked to beef heart, but was actually caused by lack of Vit.C in a beef heart only diet. Nowadays many foods are enriched with Vit.C and thus has limited this disease. Regards, Marco

@shikx. Feeding Discus tabimin only is not a balanced diet. The fish will be open for disease, get stunted or suffer from intestinal problems thatt will lead to early death. Please read the Prof's sticky thread on feeding Discus. You can also visit some of the post's by Larch to find info on Oscar feeding. He seems to have found a good balance for Oscars. Feeding any large cichlid tetra bits and bloodworms only is like you eating broccoli and all bran flakes all day. Regards, Marco

This is more than likely why one of Shikx's fish died on him earlier last week. He does know better though. The Professor has spent many hours trying to ecplain to him about the need for a well rounded diet.
