HI all. I have just joined the site and look forward to a fruitfull experience. I have kept fish for most of my life but my present large tropical tank has sprung its second leak now and I am excited with the proposition of replacing it with a new modern tank.
I cant think of any other pets that require so little maintenance once the tank is set up. This suits me fine.
I live near Muizenberg in the beautiful cape.
I hope to corespond with many of you on the site over time
    all the best

    Dave

My tank at present. Well its a tropical with dimensions of L93 x W80 x H60. A bit of an odd shape but I had it made to fit a certain spot. I have under gravel filters which have worked fine. In fact I read sites about having to change 50% water per week etc etc but with mine I could and sometimes did leave the tank for 9 weeks at a time before doing a 50% water change. Never any water condtioners either! I have alot of gravel on the bottom so maybe this helps.
I keep small fish and my favourites are tetras and gouramis with some coolies to clean up the waste food. I vary the other fish but allways have those three. I would actually like to keep angels but the last ones had a feast on my small tetras one day. Does any body know of Angels that wont grow big enough to eat neons?
I have lots of drift wood on the bottom which keeps the water nice and soft for the tetras and for years have had plastic plants but am just starting with real ones again. I found plastic was much less maintenance but am happy to be growing real ones again.
I have two 600 neon lights above and made the cover myself. The stand it steel square bar which looks nice.
I am now going to replace the tank and am looking for one a bit longer and less high. I like the look of the curved glass ones and also like the idea of the filter and heater out of the way ie in the lid. I like the idea of a cupboard under neath but the girlfriend prefers the steel stand. Umm could be a problem there! Anyway my seach starts next week for the set up.
    Wish me luck

Sorry my dimensions were wrong. Its L93 W60 H80 I think the next one will be longer but not so high. The 80cm high makes it not so easy to work in and the extra height doesnt get utilised by the fish really but is great for large plants
    Ciao again

    Dave

    Welcome to TASA!
You are near a great source of live food - the estuary near the dump turn-off.

Yes that is true. Do you suggest using a net for the small life or taking water and filtering it. I guess there is lots of shimp and the like in there. We walk down to the outlet on the beach alot and wonder if the river water coming to the sea is also stocked.I will have to take a net down some time and see.
