green algae

Hi Guys
I Need some advise my tank is growing a lot of green algae and I would like to know what can be the cause of it.

Algae require water, light and nutrients to grow.
Light: your aquariums should not be placed where it will receive loads of direct or indirect sunlight and the tank lights should be on no more than ten hours a day.
Nutrients: to much nutrients in the water can also be the cause (over feeding or over stocking), this means controlling nitrates and phosphates. The nutrients in the water can be reduces with regular water changes and good filtration. When you do a water change try to remove most of the organics matter in the substrate that decay into basic nitrates and phosphates. Use a phosphate and/or nitrate removal media in your filters.
Circulation: good circulation of the water will also make a difference as the algae cannot settle and take “rootâ€.

We need more information. Do you have live plants with high light and nutrient dosing? Or do you have plastic decor? How frequently do you do water changes? What is your fish stocking level? A broad statement like algae is caused by PO4 and NO3 is not really true.

 

What type of algae is it? Each algae is caused by a number of different things....

 

I just started this thread. It will be a work in progress, but the aim is to provide simple and effecive methods for algae control. I would actually like some feedback and realworld experiences by forum members. What did YOU do to fix the problem?
