Really helpful video. Seems like "obvious" advice but, as a relative n00b, I hadn't considered this.

Where would you recommend to get big blocks of (preferably black) sponge that I can cut myself?

I pulled a pantyhose over the bottom of my internal filter and stuck some sponge in there to pimp it a little until I can get a proper bio chamber.

Fantastic that a bunch of the tips for pimping a HOB can work for an internal filter, if you're a tiny bit creative.

 

Big blocks are hard to find. But an aquaclear 70 or 110 filter sponge is known to work.

I ended up emailing with the importers of these filters and learned that I'd have to wait till May 2018. So I picked up a Tetra-Tec canister filter second hand, instead. R950 with some unused Flourish, Focus and Spirulina. Good deal I thought! Now I can just stick in some Matrix and Purigen and call it a day!
