    I take the opposite view. Get the best you can afford.

    One spends a fortune on fish, and then buys cheap equipment. But cheaper equipment has a potentially bigger chance of failing. And if that happens, you could lose all your fish.

    For sure but I've never had a Dophin heater fail nor an Eheim. I hear your point and agree in principle but to my mind there isn't much difference between the heaters you pick up for R250 and the ehaters you pick up for R450;. Maybe that's just me.

    Personally I use a heating controller with the cheapie heater. Since the controller is turning the power on and off there is a lot lower risk of cooking your fish. And if the heater fails to heat you can easily observe the temp on the controller and then replace the heater if required.

    Have you started using it yet? Would be way easier to hide inside a tank which is great

    I'd be careful with this logic.. Are you suggesting price determines quality? Very much doubt that is entirely true for 100% of products in the market. Still, if the quality is considerably better then the point is indisputable in this regard.

    Which one do you use? Can one join 2 heaters to the same controller _ i have 2 Eiheim 300w heaters for my big tank - will the controller regulate them both. It's just that the damn Eiheim heaters are SO difficult to set to a temp - more so when there are 2 in the tank ( tank is 1500 litres)

    I have 2 FTC 1000 controllers and an Inkbird itc 308 controller. To my knowledge you cannot link heaters to one controller - each controller has a probe, a cooling slot and a heating slot. I havent looked for a controller that can do multiple heating slots so there may be some out there

    More expensive is more reliable. Cant go with that. Its like saying my 1.2 mill bmw is more reliable than a isuzu or Toyota hilux. And if one petshop then gets the ridiculous idea of charging R500 for an item and another pethop 300 for same thing it wont make ons better

    Bad comparison. It's not just about reliability, it's about build quality, usability and warranty that goes with the item. Not to mention technical support and peace of mind knowing I have a 3 year warranty on my heater.

    Not knocking the cheap stuff, but they are cheap for a reason.

    If it works and you are happy that is all that matters. I have never had expensive heaters and have never had issues. Only reason I switched to using a heating controller is that I am now keeping some endangered species and its just an extra precaution.

    I dont think many people have experience with your type of heater. See how it goes and give us some feedback at some point.

    @eros111 ,

    Your problem could be that you dont have enough watts to heat a 1500l tank effectively and effortlessly

    Rule of thumb ( keeping in mind room temperature and the temp you run your tank at) is 1w per liter
    You might say but that's a lot of wattage, however your heaters will only come on when needed and if the heaters are the right wattage for tank size they will briefly come on without straining and battling to cope and then switch off
    whilst 2 smaller heaters will work overtime and last less due to the stress they undergo and makes it more difficult, as you say, to set to a temp
    This is also the reason why often heaters dont last

    Your 1500l tank should have 3 x 500w heaters
