    Hi everyone,

I know @Dirk Bellstedt suggested 'a Manual of fish health' which I am getting, but I'm also looking for a good book on Angelfish. I know I can find the information online and on this forum, but I prefer to get a good book on the subject to cover the basics first.

    Thanks

I have the following books on Angels

    Barrons Angelfish
    Freshwater Angelfish - Axelrod
Breeding and Raising Angelfishes - Stansbury
Guide to Angelfish - Walker and Axelrod
Aqualog SA cichlids iv - Discus & scalare

Some are a bit out of date, but are still interesting to read

    Hi Killer Rabbit,

All the Axelrod books are rubbish, they are full of glossy pics and no information. You can criticize me to for making such a harsh statement, but really these books are older TFH books which are past their sellby date and in my opinion you would be wasting your money if you bought them.

I do not know the Stansbury book so I cannot comment, but what I can say is that the Aqualog books are basically also books with pictures that document the variation that can be found in these fishes. However, for general breeding and maintenance information there is no information there.

There are a number of excellent books in angels in German, one of which is by Degen (pronounced Dagin and he is German as well) which may be translated into English in the TFH press. As per usual the English press does not produce the goods with regard to decent books on angels.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Thanks prof.

I ended up buying an ebook by David Lass simply called 'Angelfish' (ISBN 9781933958224). I found it a bit light on the info, but it does go through all the basics on keeping and breeding angels, and everything seems to be fairly consistent with what you and others on the forum has said.

My main complaints with the book is that it does seem a bit dated and the author has an almost fanatical support for any lfs. Either way, it has given me the info I was looking for so that I can start out right and ask better questions when the time comes.

    Killer Rabbit,

In the last three years there have been a number of new wild caught angel types that have been imported. These include red backed angels from the Manacapuru region and more recently from Buena Vista and Santa Isabelle, then the so-called paradox angels from the Rio Negro. There are scalare angels from Peru with yellow dots that are being sold, and many more, but these have all reached the trade in the last three years so there is not much help from the books, they all need a major revamp. Why don't you check out one of the angel forums such as finarama where I am the scientific advisor, there is a lot of up to date information there.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

And then..... when I saw the title of this thread..... I was going to say...... Get yourself any book written by dr. Herbert Axelrod..... and you will find all the answers you need ..... but!!... I will also say that I am from the old school and at the time that I started breeding.... Dr. Axelrod was Mr. Tropical fish in the world and whatever he said was law...... all aquarists were aligned with what we read in available literature and there was not the varying opinions as is currently available on the internet and the vast publications, (which is mostly contaversial) .... I am an Axelrod practitioner with fluctuating success and will not divert...... I do not dispute what our proff is saying...... (and maybe it is I that should stay abreast of new developments)....... but why tamper with what is working for me..... Dr. Axelrod remains my hero.....

That was actually what started this. I have registered on finarama, but I felt a bit out of depth - just wanted to get the basics sorted so I could follow the discussions on there with a decent grounding. I always knew that very few books would do more than mention anything other than P. Scalare. I feel comfortable with information on finarama now because I know how to fill in the missing pieces in the discussions now.

I have noticed that everybody has their own way of doing things and their own tricks, etc... If it works for you, that's fine (assuming of course your fish are healthy and happy).

For me however, I can never stop learning or trying to improve things - that's part of the fun, so I try to stay up to date with all new developments and I tend to experiment a lot. Different strokes ;)

    I like Axelrod's books.

His accounts of fish collecting in remote places are very interesting. Something that fish keepers are often not aware of.

There is also the Angelfish.net forum which deals with Angel from all aspects. There are plenty of beginners there as well as advanced keepers. Caters for all levels.
