I'm looking for at least one adult, female Golden Deacon in the Cape Town area.
I have two lovely males and would like to breed with them. If you do have a large female Golden Deacon - Severum , please pm me so we can negotiate a price or perhaps let's breed them and get some juveniles!
    Gert.

A regular green form of Heros severum will breed with the 'golden' form, so it doesn't matter what colour you get. Even if you breed a gold male with a gold female, there is still the possibility of you getting green babies.

Thanx SalmonAfrica, I do know that, as I have bred them previously in Pretoria, with very nice results.
The green and golden pair will trow a couple of each colour, and even golden pairs will sometimes trow a couple of green fry with lots of yellow in them!
I would like to breed them with more pronounced squiggles on their faces!
This fish is an old hobby favorite and need more exploring!
I' m also looking for a pair of Red/orange Severums!
    Thanx for input
    Gert.

okay, correct me if i am wrong, don't you need a breeding pair cause the females are picky when choosing a mate, they don't always choose one male out of the two,i have 3 severums,2 females and 1 male, the golden ones locked lips and did the tail waving thing but after a day or two,the male chases the female around,in fact he chases both the females around,i have to keep him in a separate tank now, otherwise he will life miserable for the 2 females..please correct me if i am wrong..

Chasing females around, is not only a human thing, but are a trait of many animals, including birds and fish!
This is typical cichlid behaviour of the Cichlasoma Severums, when young, is a relatively peaceful fish. As it grows older, it becomes more quarrelsome and less suitable for a community tank. Breeding pairs should be placed in their own tanks.
I think your females are perhaps too small or not "ready". Place them in tanks so they can see each other and feed/condition them well. Soon you will see the females going plumb and are also seeking the males attention.
This is the time to move the male into the females tank, and hold thumbs!
Good luck, and keep us posted!
    Gert.

Hi there, attached is a pic of one of my red spotted golden deacons. I would like to breed them too, but they are only about 10 months old. I think that I have one male and one female. One is quite a lot bigger than the other with pointy fins. I bought them at perky pets Diep River. Both eat out of my hand. They enjoy a slice of cuccumber once a week.

That is a beautiful fish, and look like a female with that rounded dorsal fin! - but she/he is still very young.
Now, if only I can find another large Golden female... sigh!

I used to have 2 pairs of the green variety, they used to breed on a constant basis, i had to eventually sell them cos i didnt have the time or space to breed them and they where messing up the display tank, i did however raise one batch and i found i got an almost 50/50 mix of green and gold offspring, i kept one gold baby and he grew into a marvelous 15 cm male with red spots, really awesome fish
