    Hi
So I'll be going away for 12-14 days on holiday and I would like to know the best way to feed them fish and look after the plants..
Does the self timer for the lights work well especially when the lights trip every now and then or is there another way to do this?
And also will a self feeder be reliable if the lights trip when I'm away?
    Thank you

Two weeks for general tropicals should be ok without food.
And I have my tank lights on a timer - it works well.

Do you have a family member or someone else who can come past every few days and check everything is ok?
See that the lights are on the correct time, and maybe feed (you can pre-measure the portions)

From the 20th to the 24th I have someone that can do the feeding but after that no one.. Im worried my plants must not die also but I'll get a timer for the lights..
Will those weekend or vacation feeder balls help for them to feed on and be okay?

So you have someone coming around for at least part of the time.

If you have your lights on a timer, it should be ok

I would stay away from those feeder balls.

Yes for 4-5 days I have someone but they don't kniw and I won't trust anyone to set up my feeders or anything for me, I'll have to do it before time and maybe put alil less food for those days in and pre pack some food..
What's wrong with the feeder balls? if it's because it dirties the tank I don't mind that.

Those feeder balls comprises of food embedded in a plaster of paris type material. The p.o.p. slowly dissolves in the water exposing the food.

Fish are ok not eating every day. And can quite easily go for over a week.

Rather measure out two or three portions of food for the house sitter.
And the fish will be ok for the rest of the time.

Best will be to make up premeasured bags with food in. I normaly do it when I work from home for my wife. No problem. When we are away I will get somebody to pop in once a week. Do a feed and top up water. Your fish will be fine for 2 weeks.

If someone will be stopping by then get one of those pill boxes with a compartment for each day of the week so you can fill each one with a days amounts of food to prevent them from overfeeding.

Those 10 or 20 pill tubes that's R2-00 at a chemist works well. Just measure your food in them and all ok. All timers has got a back - up battery inside so the time setup won't be lost in case of power failure. When you return from holiday, DON'T OVERFEED the first few days.

That will be in the first 5-6 days.. the remainder 7 days there will be no one going in as my parents will be holidaying as well and there is no one else..
Maybe I'll pop one vacation feeder each in both tank and I'll put a timer for food in both...
My next concern is the plants.. I'll put a timer for the light in..
What I'll do is go buy everything by this weekend hopefully and test it out by tripping the lights as well.

    Thank you :)

The digital timers have a back up battery. The mechanical ones do not.

I use these timers on all my tanks, they are awesome! This is a anti Eskom device:p.They have a back up battery to keep the time running and the memory saved.20161128_214420.jpg
Please note, when Eskom is in "full swing" your lights won't go on magically due to its back up battery,it's just for the device to keep ticking.:D

Oh sorry my bad....isn't it Eish'dom:mad::confused::eek:

MORE IMPORTANT than feeding is to try and get someone to check the electricity every day - if your plugs trip or your main switch trips ..... need I say more !

That's one issue I have no control over for the about a week or so..
My plan is to leave a fairly dim light switched on all these time.. my one question is how long Can the plants survive without lights?
(java moss, jungle val, hornswort, bogota and 2 others I don't know the name off but also low tech plants..?

And how well does cucumber work with German rams.. leopard dianos, bronze corys, kribenses and 5 eel loaches.. the rest are 2 fish each,?
I've out alil cucumber in and they ate it, this is my planted tank.. the big tank I have a self feeder and it had no lid so that's fine also...

And I also have about 60 convict fry in a breeder tank in the planted tank with the java moss, how do I feed them(cucumber aswell)?

Lights on timers, feed the fishes using the pill holders as suggested, hope for the best thereafter

I have two of them for both my tanks when I go away, I don't have to worry about my lights or anything. Heck, I don't even have to worry about them right now as they come on and go off at their respective time settings. I got mine from Builders Warehouse. Not exactly the same as Christiaan's but with a black dial and buttons instead of being digital. In the event of power failure, they still continue to work when the power comes back on but the only problem is when it's off, it will only resume it's job when the power's back on which means it will be far off schedule if your power is off for a couple of hours or by one hour depending on the situation. One tiny button is two hours so I use two buttons pushed down to run the lights for 4 hours at a time and have not had any issues so far as I run LED panels over my planted tanks.
