    Hi guys,

Can anyone help? I noticed my pregnant guppy's gills were very red/bloodshot, and after looking at the other fish... I've noticed all the fish in my tank have red gills. Visable if looking into the gills from behind the fish.

Is this normal? Is the guppy only showing more red due to her pregnancy?

(I've tried taking photo's... but do you know how difficult it is to get a good picture of a fish?!?)

Hey Zoom - Stop don't panic - OK Panic - No really

All fishes gills are a bright red when viewed looking into the gills. The reason for it is the gills are the "Lungs" of the fish. The blood vessels are REALLY close to the gill walls - to aid in absorbtion of oxygen from the water, it is these blood vessels you are seeing..

Heehee, Thanks Zafgak... I feel a bit like a freak asking silly questions everytime I see something new happening in the tank that I don't recognize.

Zoom the gills should not be a very bright red but rather a pinkish red (if that makes sense). Check your ammonia levels if the gills are VERY red and seem inflamed at all. Check the breathing of the fish - is it normal?
