    i know right??

I felt like bursting in to tears when I found out I can't keep a cute little cherry shrimp. :'(
Why are freshwater crustacians banned in SA? Does anyone know the specific reason? Wasn't there a stage where they looked into legalising it?

Shrimp are banned because back in 1812 there was an epidemic and the shrimp went
crazy. They got out of tanks and attacked dogs, cats and other furry animals.
So from then on all crustaceans were banned in fear of this happening again.

Wow so just because some people couldn't keep the tank lids on their tanks in -1812- which is like a million years ago, we suffer now. Brilliant! I van honestly see why thy are looking in to revoking that law. I can completely aggree with BL fish that are banned for fear of them taking over our local rivers and ecosystems. I empathize and would never question that, but so many fish can make dinner out of lets say a cherry shrimp or a ghost shrimp. But on the other-hand i am in no way qualified to make that statement, that's only my personal opinion since they are tiny. But anyway, we'll see what the people qualified to make this decision say, best not question that for now.

Thats a good link above there:

    I like this part:
"As ridiculous as it may seem, you can compare freshwater shrimps to narcotics. It is illegal to import narcotics into South Africa, it is illegal to purchase narcotics in South Africa, regardless of whether they were imported into or manufactured inside of South Africa. This is the law.

Having these animals in your posession can lead to a fine of R100,000.00, 10 years in jail or both. you have been warned! "

    and this
"For further information please contact Marthinus van Schalkwyk ( AKA kortbroek )"
