    Hi All

I've always loved these little guys and decided to invest in a decent new setup. I know they can be difficult with soft water requirements etc. but I'm up to the challenge! I have 2 pairs and an odd female and wanted to keep a very natural South American tank with live plants, rocks and wood. Using half tap and RO water initially I've been doing about 25% weekly water changes with RO and have been able to maintain a fairly constant pH 6.8, KH 5˚, GH 6˚, Temp 28˚C.

After setup and cycle I moved my fish over to their new bigger home and they quickly established territories either side of the tank. Within the first week I've had eggs from both pairs and fry from the one pair at least! I'm sure the others have moved their fry to the back of the tank somewhere.

Also added 10 Pristella Tetras with 2 small Orinoco Angel Plecos to be joining soon.

That looks like a great setup.
You might not get many fry maturing with the Tetras and Angels in the tank though.

The tetras are keeping their distance and the rams do not seemed phased by their presence at all. The plecos are very shy and not very active. It's a natural environment, survival of the fittest it will be lol!

Hi @Scott Matthews and welcome to TASA

Absolutely beautiful setup.. love the South American look

Beautiful rams too and good luck with the babies
As @Pezulu said, chances are they will get eaten so if you want to save some of them you will have to siphon them out into another tank

Nice setup and the rams look good - vibrant and healthy it would seem. I have found their colouration to be a pretty good indicator of their general health. I got a Seachem 'Alert Combo' to provide realtime PH readings, which seems to work well, and put my mind at ease.

My two female rams seem to only ever take interest in the alpha male in the tank. They take turns spawning with him, and show no interest in the other male. This has happened with two completely different groups of fish, at different points in time, for whatever reason.
When they're ready to spawn at the same time - take cover!

Feed them a thick slice of cucumber - cross hatched with a sharp knife on both sides and weighted with something (I use a small metal paperclip type thing) so it stays on the tank bottom. Mine go crazy for it!

Hello! It's been almost a year that you've started this thread, how are your Rams still doing?

My tank is always seemingly changing evan in minor details. I'm such a perfectionist . Every time I come up with some new detail like an extra plant or something

Hi guys, just a long overdue update.

I did eventually successfully breed my rams to maturity and a sibling pair have taken over ownership of the tank :) Most of the original occupants are still around, except I lost both of my Snowball Plecos quite suddenly over a week with the introduction of new fish, despite them being in quarantine first. Was gutted as these cute guys were my fave! Still keeping true to my South American theme, newer members include a whiptail catfish and a pair of long finned ancistrus.

Nice - cool looking tank and those rams turned out great. Impressive dorsal spike!
What are the dimensions of your tank out of interest? A shallower 3ft?

The tank is 1100mm x 300mm x 400mm. I like the shallower tanks for a more natural scene.
