Please help. I have a male Kribensis whose mate turned nasty after the fry were a week or two old. His nether region has been badly mauled and it seems like a fungus has colonized the damaged area. What can I do to help him. I really don't want to lose him.

If you can post a foto it might help to identify the problem

I'm taking a stab at this and not 100% sure of my diagnoses.

I did a google search on cotton wool desease, which is a fungal infection. There are various causes for this. In your case it started due to the injury he sustained. But there are other factors involved here. If your aquarium maintanance is lacking the fungas will be present. So treating the problem doesn't stop the cause.

Treatment would be a salt dip or antifungal treatment, like Melafix. If possible in a hospital tank. To start off you should know what the condition of your aquarium water is. If you can't test the water you must assume that there might be a problem. If you were lacking behind on your wc don't do a big wc now rather do smaller wc everyday for the next week or so. You don't want the parameters to change too drasticly, you have fry in the tank to consider. To do the salt dip you use about 4 teaspoons of aquarium salt per 4L of water. You can increase salt consentration but don't go more than double. With the salt mix in a container catch the fish and place it in the salt mix, make sure that there isn't a differance in water temp as it might shock the fish. This shouldn't be done for longer that 30 minuts. Constantly opserve the fish. If at any stage the fish roles over remove it imediatley and return to aquarium. If the condition doesn't improve after 24 hours repeat. Using a med will be my last approach to treat the fungas.

Hope this helps and good luck with the sick fish

    @Dwarf,

    I agree with @pierreschoonraad

Alternatively, what I have also done is, gently net the fish to the surface and place a container with a small amount of tank water under the fish
Its easier if someone can hold the container in place for you
Then gently pour some Myxzin or Methylene blue directly on the wound.
Then put him back in the tank
The container is basically to avoid all the methylne blue to fall in the tank

I did this to two stingray pups whose tail had also been bitten and within 48 hours all the fungus was gone and the wound visibly healing
One pup i had to do it twice (ie two days) the other pup i only did once and he was fine

This can happen even if your water is fine but for peace of mind I would follow Pierre's advice and test your water
If you dont have a kit, take a small sample to the LFS, before water changes, and let them test for you. Its not expensive, last i saw they charged R25.00

    Good luck

TBH, it may be kinder to euthanaise him.
He looks in a really bad way.

But if you want to have a go at saving him, follow MaraiS, and PS advice.

Good morning Reedfish. His condition worsened significantly during the night and I euthanized him this morning. Thanks to all for their assistance, I've learned a lot about how to deal with a problem like this earlier next time.

    Sorry to hear.
Unfortunately though it's part of fish keeping.
