Some will tell you that you must first defrost the blocks, but the water temp tends to sort that out before the fish consume it, but in the case of an Oscar, they can swallow a whole block in one go, so it may be worth defrosting first to be on the safe side!!

Otherwise, there is an issue with certain frozen foods containing Camellanus worm eggs, and other nasties, which have not been killed in teh freezing process. These are usually more likely the 'cheaper' asian brands, and are usually not present in European equivelents.

Just some stuff for you to conisider, although feeding frozen foods as aposed to dry foods is much better for fish in terms of nutritional values.

    Cheers
    G!

Ja i defrosted them in a little warm water like i was advised by the petshop guy but then i got a million tiny little worms that the poor fish couldnt even taste so they didnt bother,my giraffe cichlid and i'm hoping my plecos had a feast.the only way my oscars were gonna eat them is if they were in something big enough to taste so i popped a few solid cubes in there and they as usual just gobbled them up with just a few coming out the gills which works out perfectly cause then my malawi also got some,im just a bit worried of freezing my fish lol

will check up on the name when i get home and hopefully u can tell me how good it is or not

    Oscar,

The stuff you buy from the LPS stores is the cheap stuff brought in from aisa. It's not great stuff, and as Big G has mentioned, it is usually full of all sorts of nasties that doesn't get killed in the freezing process.

The european market "manufacture" their frozen bloodworm under hugely more "sanitary" and more safer to use. As far as I am aware, the LPS stores don't carry this stock because of the price of it.. it's a little over double in price... but for the price you pay for your oscars/discus etc, the price is relative.

Dolphin would be your best supplier of the european bloodworms as I know he is importing the stuff at the moment. I picked up a packet of the bloodworm from him last night, but have not actually tried it yet.

Maybe try partially defrosting it rather than totally?? That way it will still stay roughly in a block, but won't be solid frozen??

I don't think there is any real harm though in feeding them as solid frozen blocks!!

    Cheers

Let us know what it is first??

You can get from Dolphin over PM on the site, and make arrangements with him!!

Otherwise, try the Prof as well! He also imports German stuff, which is what I use for my fish!!

    Regards
    G!

As Big G says, the professor does get as well, but because you are based in JHB, that is why I recommended Dolphin. He operates out o fthe Sandton area. Send him a PM for pricing and availability.

    This is the asian cr@p.

I'm not too sure how oscars deal with frozen food... but I know it's advised with angels to completely defrost the food first, because the frozen food inside their stomachs can cause problems. Not too sure what it casues. I seem to remember someone saying it can cause bloat. (?)

Generally you won't have problems with it causing any damage. What I did with my oscars and now my Arowana, I place the blocks of bloodworms and other things like frozen fish and pellets all together in a small amount of tank water in a jug and pour them in after a few seconds.

With this method, all the food is introduced simultaneously and the blocks are partially "defrosted" but still stuck together.

It's pretty much the only one the LPS carry Shakes. In my opinion, it's absolute cr@p, and I've lost too many fish due to it. I beleive the water used to cultivate the stuff runs off pig cr@p or something like that.

If I recall, I paid R45 for the stuff from Dolphin... but you can immedietely see the difference in quality when you put it in the water. My fish went RAVANOUS when they tasted it for the first time a few minutes ago!

When you consider that the Rotu and other similar Asian brands cost anywhere between R20 and R30 for a sheet, then R28 for German stuff is actually very good!!

I also bought some of the frozen bloodworm from Dolphin and it's very good quality. The fish went beserk when I fed it to them. I also think that I paid R45 for a pack. You can read all about the product in Dolphin's forum. http://www.tropicalaquarium.co.za/showthread.php?t=2900
