    Hey Guys.

About a month +- ago I was cleaning the pool when i found a string of frogs eggs. Knowing the chlorine will kill the eggs I took them out and put them in my main tank that I was busy taking "offline".

3-5 Days later and I had 400 tadpoles swimming about.
At first i thought they are herbivores and i wasn't worried because the tank had lots of algea for them but then the cannibalism started.

So from there on I gave them ham and Chicken to eat.

They finish a Quarter of chicken breast in about 2 days.

Now I have Huge Tadpoles, small tadpoles and about 9 Little Frogs (I gave them some land to crawl on to).

and I expect all of them to morph in to frogs this week.

    so for my 2 Questions.

    1. Whats the name of the Common Frog we get in PTA (So that I can read up on them)

    2. and do you guys think microworms or brine shrimp would be fine as feed for the Little frogs.

I should start looking for someone Who is willing to take these noise makers to there Pond.

lol when i was much younger i had something similar happen. funny enough i remember feeding them broken bread pieces and fish flakes and they were thriving in a tank i had. i just put some floating wood in it and that was their land. bad i know, but i was something like 8-10 years old. eventually a family member crashed into my tank with his bike and that was the end of my frogs :"( but they were very easy to keep. im sure you can find better food though? probably insects or daphnia?

I have a feeling that you have the guttural toad (Amietophrynus gutturalis) - they're the noisy ones you typically come across. If not they may be a related species in the genus - we have several across the country.

We get toads visiting every Spring. They sit in the pond and make a helluva noise for a couple of weeks. A few weeks later we have a tadpole expolsion, but never as many toads. This year, though, they didn't stay long. I think it got too cold. In Gauteng it is most likely the guttural toad or red toad. Franna can you post a pic and we can see if they're the same as mine.

Salmon your spot on. I keep forgetting frogs and toads are 2 different thing.

I live just across from the Moreleta Spruit. Would it be irresponsible of me to free them there?? It's where they come from to start with.

Oh how cute! If no-one here knows what they are, you might want to post that on SAReptiles - the guys on there love their frogs and are incredibly knowledgeable about them too!

If they occur naturally there, I don't see why not. Typically I wouldn't recommend releasing previously captive animals, but it is highly unlikely that they picked up any diseases under your care, and should be safe for release.
