    Hi all,

Suspect that they are probably unliked, blacklisted, illegal or all of the above, but I am going to ask anyway.

Why is no-one keeping freshwater crabs, the normal ones you can find in any and all bodies of water in SA?

@JJFury: Because it is illegal to remove indigenous animals from the wild without a permit. Also they are butt ugly and will eat your fish given half the chance.

You say ugly, I say interesting. :)

So no using them for bait for fishing then? I just find ssome of these regulations a bit strange. For example, you are also not alloowed to keep indigenous insects as pets without a permit, but I can spray as much insecticide as I want!?

Anyhow, lets not start another rant'n'rave about this. Is it actually possible to get permits for this kind of animal? If so, is it diffiicult?

i've kept the local variety in tanks in the past , caught out of small unpolluted streams , they are pretty boring and dull.
I never had a problem with fish being killed and eaten

I've also kept them. Just a small brown one from one of our local waterways. As long as you have a place for them to leave the water on occasion they are very low maintenance. I had plants growing emersed at the time which seemed to be all he needed.
