    We are looking for a french bulldog, but seeing that there are so many scams out there and breeders ask an insane amount of money! Does any one here maybe know of someone that has a frenchie for sale?

    I have 2 english bullies, the one's birth day was actually today, we also got scammed about a year ago with a "durban breeder" the dog was paid for but never arrived at the airport.

    Would also like to know if there are any in the pta and jhb areas.

    I was looking for Shiba Inu puppies just last month,everything was arranged and i was going to pick up in JHB and then suddenly the seller says they moved to Cape town and they can fly the puppy in to PTA for an extra amount.

    How can you place an ad claiming you are from JHB then suddenly capetown a day after the ad was placed.

    French Bulldogs have a number of health issues, and thus it is imperative to get your puppy from good breeding stock. It might cost more initially, but can save you allot in vet bills and heartache further along the line. Try to seek out a KUSA registered breeder

    I'm in CT but have a very reputable Frenchie breeder as a client at the vet were I work. I can try get her contact details for you. Her dogs are excellent in type and temperament and are very healthy. We have a few other clients who own dogs from her and they're really great. She also does all the relevant health-checks and whatnot.

    Alternatively, you can look at Boston Terriers. I have one. They're wonderful little dogs and have less health issues than Frenchies. There is a country-wide rescue that gets dogs of all ages and rehomes them. All the dogs are fostered in people's homes before hand. http://bostonterrier.org.za/

    @Xandoz

    Thanks, i did look at the bt and seeing that the have less of a health issue and are a bit more energetic. I will love a frenchie and if they are not insanely priced i will look at getting one if she has got some pups. But if i cant find a frenchie i will go for a bt, but it will have to be a puppy as we have the chihuahua and we take the dogs to friends and so on so they need to be socilized from a young age. Just a question if you could get a frenchie or a bt for the same price, which would you buy?

    I would go for the BT. Admittedly, I've never owned a Frenchy, but see them regularly at my work. I find the frenchies to be fun little dogs but are prone to various breathing-related issues such as brachyciphalic syndrome (narrow airways due to the skull's anatomy), elongated soft palates, small nares (narrowed nostrils), heat stroke, they struggle to mate naturally and always require a C-sec for birthing. That's also why they cost so much. They usually need to be artificially inseminated and require a C-section to deliver the pups, plus there's the cost of rearing the litter and the breeders will usually have the pups price so they can recoup those costs.

    Boston Terriers are prone to the same issues as Frenchies but to a lesser degree, although we see more patella luxations in BTs. BTs are also able to mate naturally and are less likely to require a C-sec since their pups heads are smaller and more compatible with the dam's pelvic size. That's why BT's are usually cheaper; they cost less to breed.

    In terms of temperament, Frenchies are slower and more "serious" and, maybe it's just me, but they don't seem as intelligent as BT's. BT's are much more energetic, but are happy to be couch potatoes 80% of the time too. Both breeds are fairly easy to train, but have an extremely stubborn streak. Just because they know a command doesn't mean they'll do it when you ask.

    I find BT's also to be more travel-friendly, particularly the smaller ones. My girl, Peggy, weighs 7kg and has a racy build. If I chuck her outside, she'll charge around for hours, but if she's inside, she sleeps mostly. I take her with me to work and she sleeps in a cage in the dog ward. She loves just sitting there watching everything.

    So, I'm biased, but I would pick a BT over a Frenchie. I just love the BT's intelligence and sense of humour and that they have such a fun vibe about them.

    PS, whichever breed you go for, I strongly recommend pet medical aid. Brachyciphalic breeds (short-faced dogs) on a whole are prone to issues, some hereditary and some not and these generally cost alot to treat. It's worth having pet insurance in place just incase you get hit with a massive vet bill. Alot of the issues these breeds present with require specialist surgeries and specailist procedures almost always cost more than what a GP vet would cost. The practice I work at is owned by CT's only orthopaedic and surgical specialist vet, which is why we see so many of these dogs.

So thanks so much for the info and help. Once i get my puppy i will post a pic. How much does medical aid cost for a dog on average?

    No probs :) You won't be sorry about a BT! My girl was about 6 months old when I adopted her. She was a stray that was handed in at the vet and never claimed. She totally hooked me on the breed.

    I think medical aid is about R150 - R180 per month, depending on the company you use. Petsure and Medipet are the 2 most popular companies. Medipet seems to be more leniant with how you can use your policy, but it's wort checking them both out and seeing what suits you best.

    She's beautiful!!! I'm so jealous. I never knew my Boston as a puppy; I adopted her when she was about 10 monhs old. I want a puppy too!!!

    Just get her some Petscreen for the white ear. It's a pet sunscreen that you can get from a vet or vetshop. She'll need it for when she plays in the sun.

    @sick -lid man , I'm not a vet, but I work at a vet practice. I'm an after-hours receptionist.
