Hi all. I’m about to restart my tank have just relocated cross country. I decided to shut it all down before the move and start again later when I could gather up the right equipment wanted to go all out for my awuascaped tank. So now, I want to buy a Fluval FX4 canister filter which I’ve set my heart on but I’m concerned in terms of media. It uses rather specific sponges and I’m not seeing a retailer selling these. Other media is readily available. Anyone have an idea?

I see your location is Johannesburg, not sure if that is the current one though.

Stunning cannister to have. I also looked into getting 1 about a year ago. You are restricted with the cartridges though. Not much you can diy out of it in the end unfortunately, which if why I didn't get it.

Who are you planning on buying the filter from?
If it's a fish shop they should have spares?

There are newer models in the fx range.
Am not sure if the media is interchangeable?

Sorry I had my filters mixed up. Was looking at the fx3. Fx4 has way more diy possibilities

I’m going to get it from Takealot. I’ve looked high and low for a store that sells them and simply can’t find them. Looked at the Tetratec 1200 Plus but I understand is has issues with leaking. I really like the Fluval FX4 and reckon I can make DIY sponges and use the supplied empty bags to fill with other media.

Another q...... Oddysea dual or quad 120cm T5 lamps for a 1.2m heavily planted aquascaped tank? I’ve been using an LED solution till now but I’m not thrilled with the results..... now I’m looking to go the T5 route but am not sure if quad is overkill?

Quad ... esp if LED did not work for you. Easier to run less tubes than make space for more.

    Later Ferdie
