Hey all. i was just wondering at what age do flowerhorns need to be before they can start to breed. the pair i have is both not even 1 year old and they are showing breeding behaveor. male started to buold a nest, protects it with his life. and when the female comes around, the male gets so exited and starts rubbing his boddy against hers and puffieng up his gills. was jyst wondering what u guys think. are they going to breed or are the just trying to but still to jung. lol. thanks. love to know what u think.

    Hi there

One of the problems with Flowerhorns is that they're a hybrid fish, and because of this breeding is highly unlikely. Many of the produced hybrid fish are infertile. This means that they either won't lay eggs at all, or they'll lay eggs but no fry will hatch out. They will, however, still engage in breeding behaviour, such as territory holding, courtship, nest-making and egg laying.

If you're lucky, the eggs may be fertilized sucessfully. The resulting fry will most likely be protected by the parents, and once they have used up their yolk sac they can be fed on small live and frozen foods.

This all does sound like breeding behaviour, but like I mentioned earlier, the chances of this being successful are very slim.

    Regards

I have red mostthings about the breeding of flowerhors. and what i noticd is that they say is that they are fertile but the problem is that when the egs hatch most of the fry are not flowerhorns but show more strains of uther fish that they used to greate the flowe horn. if my female is not fertile il most probly get a texas female or maby a porrot and see what comes out! lol. know that the male parrot is infertile but lukkely not the female! or maby a red devel. anny one of the fish that they used to create the flowerhorn.

As was already mentioned in another of your threads, Texas Cichlids are blacklisted, so we cannot dicuss the keeping or breeding of them on TASA. I would suggest you should not cross it with your flowerhorns for that reason alone.

    G!

The resultant fry will be a huge messed up gene pool of a species. You'll be lucky if the fry sell or any LFS accepts them.

i know they are blacklisted.. due to the fact that i dont have the memory of a goldfish. but there is such a thing as freedom of speech and i can talk about them if i want to! and dont worry i will not breed them or sell them or take them out of my tank.

Freedom of speech is a right, but I must warn you that on this forum the discussion of blacklisted species isn't taken lightly, and such posts may be deleted or suspension of the user's account can occur.

Wel u have 3 choices. 1. import them from taland for abou 600-800 a peac. or go hunting. there isa a few of them that that the petshops dond know what they are and sell them for about 50-100. but took me almost monthes to get them. and 3rdly. u can wait till my fry get big and come choos some for u thats in good condition. go read up on how to grade them!! u have to grade the fish becaus of the fact that they are hybrids. only half of the fish is going to look like flowerhorns and when they do u grade them from c to AAA

It may be of help to @eddy , @Legendnaz , others here

I agree ; all sorts of fish are named and traded, local or foreign sourced.
....after all fishkeeping is a human pastime, so creation of new varieties, patterns, colours, shapes AND NAMES will always exist!

I have a few FlowerHorn stashed away observing development of 3 types for now
...Breeder "rated" them as 'A', that was 55mm, HOW would he know?!
    Now they're 80-100mm ,took 2months

... I obtain them from several Asian countries .
    PM if interested.

PS Looking at getting "Thai SILK" or simlar near solid turquoise coloured specimens, even for Hybrid, they are fabulous monsters to own!!!!
