    Good evening all,

I have been given an old flowbin which was used for oil. Is it possible to get it clean to use as a breeding pond?

Would it be safe once it has been cleaned and rinsed etc

    Thanks in advance.

I once read that the plastic somehow absorbs the oil and then with water leeches into the water. I'm not sure I quite remember the source but that was what I took from it. I'm sure others will have a more detailed answer

Thanks, that's what I thought. It would have gone into the plastic.

Clean it with a surfactant (like dishwashing liquid) and it should be fine. Then rinse it many times. I have one that I put under a gutter and every summer I breed fish in it. What I would do is once its clean fill it up and let it go green in the sun. Then see if mosquitos and other aquatic insects start to live in it - if they survive then fish will survive. I really doubt a little bit of oil that may or may not have leeched into your container will harm the fish (I am assuming cooking oil for some reason).

I would soak with warm water and detergent/soap. That should help break down any remaining traces of the oil
And then rinse thoroughly with clear warm water, multiple times

I agree, a good soak with warm water and sunlight dishwasher, would actually first wash well with the dishwasher then add the warm water and dishwasher and allow an overnight soak
Finnally rinse very well the next day and you should be ok

Get good quality non solvent based degreasing fluid. Wash the oil with this. Then use soap to clean the degreaser out.
