    Good morning everyone,

Has anyone ever did the fishless cycling thing and does it really work. I've read about it, but is not sure. I've setup a 10L tank for a siamese fighter and really don't want to use fish to cycle. What type of ammonia do i have to use?

Most of us do fishless cycling. But to spped up the process you can (1) add fish food to the empty tank, and (2) use existing material from an already established filter and put it into the new tanks filter.

It is also recommended to add beneficial bacteria to the tank via chemicals. (Seachem's Stability, or Nutrifin Cycle.) I believe Microbe Lift have a good product, but good luck getting hold of it!

Thanx for the tips. I've got an established tank i can get material from, so if i put in filter material and some of the substrate from the established tank won't i transfer some of the beneficial bacteria as well?

You can also try looking around for bottled ammonia - just make sure it's the type that an ammonia-water mix and has nothing else in it. :)

One way to check if it is the right ammonia is to shake the bottle. If it foams, then DON'T use it. Ammonia should available at any of the chain stores.
