EHi all my 9 rosyfin tetras died of ich today.

I upped my temp to 28 degrees.

I read that if the parasite does not have a host it dies, is this true?
I will be doing a 75% wc tomorrow.

When will I be able to put new fish in again?

    Please advise!

    Hi @hviviers75

Sorry to here about your loses.

Ich is usually cause by high stress levels. Causing this stress could be a few things. Firstly a main causer of ich and stress is bad water quality. What are your water changing schedules, how much water is removed, treatment of water before adding. Another stress causer is high fluctuations between temperature in short periods of time. In our South African winter and with a low quality heater this is common.

Do the 75% water change. If you haven't got any fish raise the temp to 30 degrees as this causes the ich to multiply and produce faster making them more prone to the medications and treatment.

Salt also works great, once again if you haven't got any fish in the tank.

    Hope this helps.

I have never perceived Ich to be a problem...... When I notice any sign of Ich, I merely raise my water temperature to 31 deg C and keep it there for 3 days before I gradually reduce the temp again to my original 26/7 deg.....

In my case.... The main cause of ich is when I move fish from one tank to a another where the water temp is slightly lower without first floating the fish. No problem if the receiving tank is at a higher temp, then a direct transfer can take place ....

I agree with @Cheetah. Whenever I see some strange symptom in my fish, (Usually clamped fins are the first to show), I up the temps to 32 degrees for 2-3 days, without any medication. This normally helps.

My previous post refers. Just to prove me wrong, the very same day I wrote that, I got nailed by what seems to be a very persistent strain of Ich. Higher temps with malachite green treatment did not help. I put my fish on a MET treatment today (7Mg/L). Luckily there is nothing wrong with their apetite, and they ate a lot of the MET. I might be imaginig things, but it looks like my fish are improving already. What I find amazing, is that my fry seem to be unaffected by the Ich.

Dude sorry to tell you but raising your temperature to 28deg was never gonna kill the ich. To treat ich you would need to raise the temperature to 32deg for 10 to 14 days. You do it for that period to make sure the ich is eradicated for its entire cycle. Ich cannot survive at temperatures of 32deg. I'm really sorry your fish died dude. Its not a cool feeling :(

@DewaldC. Metronidazole. I used a generic equivalent called Acuzole. It contains 400mg of MET per tablet, so I used 1 tablet per 50L water. After 3 days, do a water change, and repeat treatment. If necessary, treatment can be repeated a third time, after another 3 days. A side bonus, is that it will also cure hole in the head, and open sores on the sides of coldwater fish.
